I want to start out simple
take the give obj

render it however you like, best image gets to choose the next object(s) we use. I will pick the winner after a few days

Eh, could probably be eyeballed close enough if there was a reference image with some guidance lines. All can set it up as a viewport background however they can, lock the camera in position, tweak the FOV and done.

Is this exclusively a UV mapping + texture + shader comp, or of we want we could like do a volumetric render with a 3D texture mapped arbitrarily to the cubes?

No art school has you working at the school 9-5, 5-6 days a week. Maybe 1 or two days you have three 3-hour classes, often one being a LAB, while others have 1 or 2. And lots of that is sitting there listening to someone talk or following along slowly, not highly focused work all day long, all week. Not to mention the frequent over-time that happens at a studio, and bringing work home with you when you'd like to personally add more polish to an asset than you've been assigned time to; y'know, for the love of the craft.
And you're assuming to know what other things I have to deal with in my life on my free time, which is quite a bit unfortunately.

If you're one of those gamer kidz who thinks this is going to be some dream job where you make kewl games and play them all day long, think again. This is a career of passion, you have to be willing to give it a large portion of your life, more so than almost any other job requires, if you want to succeed, especially with how flooded the job market is now.

and you think homework is just going to take 3 hours for each class. i spend at least 5 hours a day. at least. working on all of my homework

with a job there's a time when you can leave, yeah there's overtime. but there is still a point where you get to go home. most studios dont let you take the stuff you are working on home with you.

what im saying is. you have time, you just dont want to do it.
