>>132930632It actually goes beyond that, as you subconsciously want to do that even more to someone with a tragic past, because in fairy tales (and to some degree Katanagatari is set up like one with a sprinkle of East Asian muh honor novels) you have been trained to root for the party with the tragic past as "good" and their quest to be unquestioningly justified by said wrongs.
Katanagatari has a few instances where you start to see the seems set up to trick you but most anons probably didn't even question it and even if you are paying attention you keep second-guessing yourself if it's just Nisio trying to screw with you once you have become aware of them.
I am not familiar with the novel but the show does quite a nice job in that regard
