Art was still superb. Characters who look like real people, not generically pretty actors. The tone of the series would suffer if they tried to cute it up - some scenes were supposed to be disturbing and grotesque. Hell, the anime was supposed to be scary and grotesque, and it did its job well. Haven't read the manga though, maybe it's better. Still liked the anime.
