There was a time where they had a chance to replace Ash as the protagonist and cycle in a new one.

Ash is the hero and face of the anime franchise, and he is popular, even if he's hated by a vocal minority. That and he's sitll the protag because he's a welcoming face to old viewers and new.
His companions change because it shows how you're always able to find life long friends anywhere in the Pokemon world, and while Ash is aiming to be a Pokemon master, no matter how vague it is, the people he's traveling with all have different goals.
Also, not every show needs a changing protagonist, what works for some shows may not work, or may not actually be necessary for others.

In each game, all the protagonists are doing their own thing and are only made special by what you do. So they can change the character all they want, but all their accomplishments become yours in a way and that follows on in the next game you play where you know even more of what you're doing. With the anime, if they started over with a new protag it'd get old as fuck.

How about new characters doing the exact same thing over and over for years on end, leaving audiences with no real attachment to the character because they came out of nowhere and they'll just be replaced later on. With the way they have it now, Ash is sort of like the player. He has a better grasp of what he's doing, but he's still in a whole new place with a brand new attitude, still having to catch them all and be the best that he can be.

I feel the same. Gen 5 may have had a similar structure as the previous games, but the plot and overall themes were enjoyable. The idealism vs realism theme is played out in a somewhat fresh way that kids can understand, and N did absolutely nothing wrong.

I think they tried to do something similar by making the plot more grandiose in both the gen3 remakes and in gen6, but it came across as cheap in ORAS, and uninteresting in XY. I hope they do better with Z, or else in gen7.

I do enjoy the Looker subplot though, overall, and the romance in ORAS is a step in an interesting direction. Don't know if it'll be any good, but, might be fun.

At GSC it was "Get the badges, get to the league, somewhere near the end of the gyms there's legendary trouble and you have to take down the evil team!", and that remained constant from RSE through DPPt, and onward. It's just that the evil teams had pretty shallow or predictable motives, except for in generation 5, probably because N was a good character that added something to the story.
