So is Studio Ghibli actually good or just overhyped kids shit?

I loved Grave of the Fireflies but I understand most of their movies are geared towards kids.

Not him but kid movies are limited by their own rating. You can't write the story in any way you want, or portray things in any way you want when it's targeted towards children, you'r limited on what you can and can't show. The main reason why people favor anime over western cartoons in the first place is due to anime being generally targeted towards a more mature/older audience. This and because of their overall variety.

Ghibli is anything but that. In fact, Ghibli movies target the largest possible audience, things like Nausicäa or Mononoke can prove to be quite difficult to children because the content involves on-screen deaths or ripped apart limbs. Anime is targeted towards all audiences in fact.

I don't think that Ghibli movies are too violent for kids, but I do agree with you that they can be quite difficult to follow for a kid. I remember being extremely confused when I watched Mononoke and SA as a kid.

Whether they are aimed at kids or not I'd say they certainly are something adults can enjoy too.
At least they aren't kids entertainment in the sense that they are incredibly dumbed down because the creators look down on children but rather something people of all ages can enjoy.

I think using Mononoke is a bad example in this context, as I feel it was more geared to adults than most Ghibli movies are. SA is pretty heavy though for most kids, likely wouldn't show it to my kids until they were at least eleven or twelve.

The age of the protagonist usually corresponds to the target audience. The Wind Rises, Only Yesterday, and Porco Rosso were aimed at adults, Howl and Princess Mononoke were aimed at teens, Totoro and Ponyo were aimed at really little kids, etc.
