Who do you guys think is the best studio for each genre?

For example, Silver Link seems to be the studio that adapt the best(not shit) harem shows. Then we have SHAFT, which is probably the best studio for eccentric anime.

You guys can decide for any other genre I haven't mention.

I believe I speak for everyone here when I say JC Staff is the best modern anime studio.

Season after season they produce hit after hit, and it's high time we recognize their quality writing and animation.

For me it's Madhouse, by a long shot. They always tried to produce anime that no one else would. They never got stuck in any kind of comfort zone, like it's the case with Kyoani. They always tried to push diversity and they're the studio with the best track. Too bad that they are not as great as they were in the past but hey, we could say the same thing about every studio.

That's incredibly difficult to say because every studios does different kinds of anime. I'd say that Kyoani is very good in doing slices of life, Sunrise is good in doing mechas, Madhouse generally has the best seinen anime. I don't know, like I said, that's very difficult to measure because every studio produces all kinds of different genres.

I agree. Madhouse is also my favorite studio and its a shame they haven`t had much success with adapting/making really good anime the last years. Regarding the 2011-2015 part of your chart i can only see 2 anime that can be considered a show of high quality and that actually has interesting content. Meanwhile the other anime timelines on your chart has a bunch of classics. Now they have One Punch Man though, which is ok so far. I hope they will give us good shows in the future, but its hard actually making something good these days for the studios to survive economically - as the anime industry has changed since the old days. Nowadays i think they are forced to take risks if they want to adapt or make something original with passion, because they never know if it will be a hit or not, unless they go the safe route and give anime fans just what they want.

Anyway, even things like Aoi bungaku, Vampire Hunter, Casshern sins, Monster and Kaiji are more out of the ordinary than the things that Shaft did.

That's because you forget the past.
Here's 4 titles that were made in between Kaiba and Tatami: Stitch, Chaos;head, Kurozuka, Ultraviolet:code 044.
All stuff you rather forget about.

The is just the result of the anime bubble collapsing, a lot more stuff was made back in the day, that meant more masterpieces but also a lot more really forgettable and bad stuff.

Shaft and Gainax are extremely overrated studios in my opinion. They get a massive amount of credit for just a few franchises, while studios like Sunrise and Madhouse have a much bigger and diverse track when it comes to good anime.

Not to mention that I can't fathom how people consider things garbage like Gunbuster and FLCL as masterpieces. Sure, I can understand why some people would call NGE and TTGL masterpieces, but Gunbuster?Give me a break.

Stop obsessing over studios. The majority of workers in the anime industry are freelance and will work for a variety of different studios during their careers. Even among studios with significant numbers of in-house staff, the quality of their works will depend on the particular staff working on a particular show. The actual people behind an anime are more important than a studio name.

Satoshi Kon worked at Madhouse until the day he died. Yuasa worked at Madhouse for years. Shinbo is working at Shaft for decades. Miyazaki and Takahata worked at Ghibli for decades. The vast majority of Kyoani staff members are working at the studio since years ago. Anno worked at Gainax for decades and I could name my more examples.

This is something I always wanted to ask

I watched Ef few months ago(it's shit), and it has the usual Shaft flavor but Shinbou still didn't direct at Shaft by that point.
I taught he was the reason their visuals are the way they are, but it seems they aren't.

I did hear multiple times here that Shinbou doesn't do shit so what's up with that?

I found the last few episodes a bit jarring, not a fan but the journey to this ending was pretty lovely. The bell episode is still one of my farovite episodes..

I enjoy at least 50% of their shows. On your image I can at least tell you what I thought was utter trash:

Besides that i either haven't seen it or enjoyed it.

But I am hard pressed to say which of those shows is honestly good and not just fanservice entertainment.

I would say S1 Wixoss was good, and Railgun as well as Utena (which si like billion years ago, I wouldnt even count it in anymore).

Besides that overblown RomComs and harems.

It's A1 pictures only actual success and it sold horribly.

I would say if any other Studio would have adapted it, it would have been better, even though I like A1 character designs and their early episodes budgets (god that first episode looks amazing).

I can identify an A1 pictures anime every time based on their character designs. They have also pretty good standards when it comes to Character designs.
And if you count asses as characters then you will figure out an A1 production in the first episode

And what I'm ultimately trying to say is simply that the actual staff behind an anime are more important than the name of the studio. Your examples prove that. Kon and Yuasa both worked at Madhouse for years, but had very different styles. Just knowing they were Madhouse wouldn't inform you about them at all. Miyazaki and Takahata are noticeably different directors. Even in studios with a strong unified visual culture like KyoAni, different directors can stand out.

Well I was reading OPM before any anime was announced (I think for at least a year if not longer I was reading the manga) and while it isn't the best thing ever, I find it better than almost all other anime that came out this year.

Just because it isn't the same generic LN adaptation we've seen a billion times before.

Yes it is repetitive, but I honestly don't care, because it is comedy. Any comedy is somewhat repetitive. And they garnish it enough with the side character to keep it interesting, even if OPM will just one punch the enemy in the end.

Heck, eventually the author might introduce an enemy as strong or stronger than OPM who knows.

Chuuni was 7/10 at worst
Kyoukai was 8/10 at best
Tamako was a masterpiece, though not quite reaching GOAT status like K-On! or Disappearance did. Love Story was pretty good too.
Never seen Free, but considering its success, its probably okay.
Amagi was fun as fuck and better than most comedies out there.

Honestly the only good anime that Kyoani did were Haruhi, Nichijou and K-ON, at least in my opinion. Chuuni, Hyouka, Lucky Star, Amagi, Clannad and Tamako were okay but nothing special

Aside from K-On! being unanimously the best anime ever made, having a favorite Kyoani is purely based on preference since none of them are bad.
K-On!, Lucky Star, and Tamako Market are my favorite Kyoani, but Haruhi, Hyouka, and Hibike are at the bottom of my list.

If I could only watch shows from one studio I would probably pick Madhouse of JC staff, although they don't produce much great anime like before, they do mantain me entertained with a show most of the seasons, even though my favorite studio for shows would probably be Brains Base.

I find stupid to fuss over which studio is better or such things as 'loyalty'.

I used to like Kyoani a lot when I first started watching anime with shows like Haruhi, Fumofu and Lucky star, but since Hyouka I can't finish a show they produce for example.

On a related note, I think that people really underrate the Haruhi TV series around here, they always mention the movie but rarely the TV series.
The only reason why the movie felt so meaningful and cathartic to the viewer was due to everything that happened in the series. The melancholic/sad atmosphere only works because it acts in contrast to the light hearted and happy feeling that the series had. The slow pace of the movie is enhanced because it acts in contrast to the fast paced nature of the series(which is used to represent Haruhi's behavior). Kyon's monologue at the end only has impact because of how the series portrayed him in the first place. The vast majority of things that happened in the movie were to make the viewer(and Kyon)realize how they need Haruhi. The movie would never work without the series. It needed all the build-up and characterization.

Also, I think that the Melancholy arc is as good as Disappearance arc.

You might have a point as to why people have widely different opinions about the series but everyone has a similar opinion about the movie. I think that the best way to watch Haruhi is by watching both the first and second season by release order, which would be 28 episodes. You don't really need to see all endless eight episodes and instead can just watch the first, second and last episode of the arc.

Dogakobo, KyoAni and P.A. Works for SoL and anything surrounding girls.
Sunrise and Madhouse for anything else. JC Staff can be really good at times but they are hit or miss.

The staff itself, is kind of what matters the most though.
