>>132807728>I figure this is a good thread to ask: what is the best way to transfer a raw VHS rip to online? What format should I export it as? Should I clean my VCR beforehand? You get a decent branded DVD recorder. Depending on what you find nowadays. I have a Magnavox MWR10D6 recorder. Other top brands include Funai and ILO. You might have to find a GoDVD box to over ride any possible macrovision on the source.
A friend of mine has an ILO recorder and it has good video. A plus for his model is that I put a hacked firmware in it so it has a 2.5 hour mode and macrovision is not present. Another plus is that when the burner goes bad, we just put another IDE DVD burner in and it works fine again. Can't say that for other DVD recorders.
Use good DVDs to record to. Verbatim +R is what I use. Rarely a bad burn, but you have to inspect the data side for imperfections.
Once you have it on DVD, you rip it to any other format. DVD Fab seems to work well, but I haven't done much with it. I did one test AVI conversion and that was it.
Unless your VCR is fucking dusty, you shouldn't have to clean it. But even so, use a can of compressed air. As long as it's not eating tapes (test it beforehand), you're good to go.
