Sup animes
I want to learn Japanese and I assumed you would know the fastest way to learn. Any of you anons self taught the language and could point me in the right direction? Mind you I don't have money to buy any programs, so if they are pay to learn is there a torrent or somewhere I could steal it? Thanks.

I learned Chinese first and then Japanese. Completely self-taught. It means you'll be mute since you have no conversational partner, but you'll be able to read most things.

Start with memorizing the hiragana/katakana charts with the help of Pokemon names, then read Japanese children's literature and watch Japanese children's cartoons that have lyrics displayed and furigana over everything. Progress upward from there.

Oh, grammar is non-existent in songs, but it's an easy way to memorize how to "say" a lot of things in certain orders.

Quickest and best way to learn spoken Japanese is immersion or a situation where your daily life will depend on your ability to engage with locals or shopping.
Listening to tapes and videos rarely work because there's no one there to give you feedback or a confused look when you butcher words. At minimum, find a fluent speaker who will talk to you daily in Japanese.

If you think that's enough to help you get by...
The English loan words do make reading some parts easier but a lot of times the original meanings have been changed significantly and saying them in English accent (as opposed to the Japanese pronunciations) makes less sense.
