Compare it to this trap picture that I happen to possess, long hair, hair accesories, 100% female clothing, etc... It's a male but you would never call that a husbando.
If the sex of the character was unknown or ambiguous (think Ruka from S;G) then you might call it a waifu. But since we know that Sonic is an androgynous male, husbando makes a lot more sense.
