Literally because of hype. Hype gets overused a lot these days, but this show epitomizes it. Master Asia's horse had a fucking Gundam, and had the same transformation sequence that every human pilot did. Master Asia used a scarf to cut a building in half. Neo Holland's Gundam was hiding as a fucking windmill until the finals.

This show had balls, and that is what hype is really about.

Both wing and the original series were released in burgerland before G Gundam. I think Wing was the first popular one though.

All I remember about 08th MS was I didn't realize nipples were censored until I saw the uncensored chinese version. Also that it started out really good but then the writer died.

MSG was fairly popular at the time but was taken off the air soon after 9/11 which cut its legs. I think they were given reruns in 2002 but in a late night slot.

Wing was the first on TV, but I believe we got the 0079 movies as the first official piece of Gundam in America. Of course those were straight to video.
Wing was definitely what cemented Gundam's popularity in America, for god knows what reason.

Simple, It had shit blowing up for the boys and fujobait for the girls even if they didnt know it at the time. It also helps that the toonami promo for Wing was really good, so good that Bandai used it for official commercials.
