I personally say yes to G or Wing, especially that's the era you remember Gundam for. They older ones are okay, but not as accessible and in many cases, not as fun. MGS and Zeta are fun but in a wacky "are they fucking serious?" sort of way. Other than that the stories take themselves far too seriously.

The problem with the mobile dolls is their skill varies on who they take on because of Gundam Wing's ludicrous levels of plot armor.

In theory a a machine should be able to take a mobile suit to its breaking point since it doesn't need to worry about a human pilot passing out from high Gs or maneuvers with the only drawback being the lack of using creative tactics during battle. But in a stand up fight, they should destroy everything.

You seem them shitting on the cannon fodder Earth Sphere and OZ forces but the moment a named character shows up they just obliterate the dolls. You can say it has to do with their superior skill level, but most of the time the dolls just run straight into the shots for them. Hell there's only TWO times in the series a mook actually hits a mobile doll.
Regardless Treize was right about the Dolls.

To be fair, the zero system outfitted mobile dolls are controlled by a human (Zech or Dorthy) which allows them to coordinate attacks and preform more efficiently. A computer can already calculate all possible outcomes. The Zero System just helps to make it digestable for the human brain, unless the process causes your brain to shut down.

What ever happened the Trent's body? The OZ pilot who was messing with the Zero System and the last time you see him, his visor shatters and everyone assumes he died

Tactically, maybe, but reflect wise, the show went out of its way to show that they were superior to normal pilots.

Like when Dr Jay fired the beam rifle shot at the cluster of OZ soldiers and Mobile dolls. Only the named characters and mobile dolls survived and they specifically say their reaction time was superior to the other pilots.

My favorite scene from this series is when Quatre is fighting with Heero and Trowa, and Trowa's Vayeate sustains serious damage from the beam cannon.

And he gives this speech while flying away from them deeper into space before his suit explodes.

Wing's alright, but it drags on way too long and the "politics" are the most nothing thing on the planet. Combine with shoddy stock footage action and mediocre battles and you have a slog.

The Gundam pilots, their girlfriends, and Trieze are all pretty cool characters so it's bearable. A lot of OZ Ms are quite cute, and the Gundam's are generally decent. A lot of people remember Wing badly because of Zero Custom, but Zero's pretty handsome. And of course Tallgeese is in it.

Yeah, pretty sure that the mobile dolls would be better than your average soldier, but even Treize takes them down. I don't doubt for one second that the named characters (Zechs, Treize, Gundams) would outdo normal pilots and AI based on normal pilots (with good reaction speeds).

Before I watched Wing, I only know the cast through playing super robot taisen alpha and alpha gaiden.

Fucking Gundam Wing. The plot was terribly paced, the people and dialogues make characters from Tomino Gundams sound perfectly normal and characters switch allegiances with even lesser justifications than the ones in G-Reco.

And yet, despite all these flaws, there's just something about it that makes it so damn entertaining to watch.

The point was seen, but none of the other pilots would really do Treize justice because they didn't have clashing philosophies (Heero and Trowa were blanks, Duo and Quatre were just 'OZ is evil, for mum colonies!'. Hell, Wu Fei for all his faggotry, was really the only one who had a proper contrast with Treize because he was all about 'JUSTICE! AND TREIZE'S VERSION OF JUSTICE WAS WRONG!' And you then see it blow up in his face in the final battle when Wu Fei completely misjudged Treize.

Mobile Doll AIs were complete shit though. It says a lot about a weapon when you can trick it into friendly firing it's whole army just because you shoot them a few times. Sure helps to explain why the had to hold them by then hand with human commanders when they started deploying them.

You have to remember that the final battle against Treize wasn't for Treize's sake, but to bring closure for Wu Fei's character development since after his first meeting with Treize where he got his ass handed to him, he had a crisis of confidence and didn't know what to do with his life. Yes, it was poorly handled throughout the series, but you can't just leave Wu Fei hanging when he needs to have a final confrontation with Treize.

Read the manga, it handles the ending much better
