At the front you see a comedy. But it actually manages to create its own unique atmosphere and has some meaningful character interactions amongst all the joking around.

If you look at other SoL anime most of them fall short of creating any sort of atmosphere. For example Gochuumon whose S2 is airing this season is straight pandering to the viewer and doesn't even try and hide it. The interactions between characters are purely to elicit a "MOE MOE KYUN" reaction from the viewers.

The fact that NNB has dabbled in giving its characters development already puts it up there with Aria even though it's of course nowhere that good.

Also did anyone feel that S2 was better than S1?

There were quite a few good shows this year. Hibike was amazing, Pleiades was excellent but I can't give it AOTY because of just how bad some of the 3DCG was. I liked everything but the first episode of Death Parade, but it could have done with some world-building. It felt incomplete. Shirobako was fun but a little manic at times and it's too early to grade this season although the best shows are supposedly two cour.

I don't know dude, the only other show I can think of that come close at all not from Fall season is Houkago no Pleiades which cannot be AOTY because too little people watched it. Other popular but good shows that have aired all have major flaws.

Kekkai Sensen - Stupid anime original end that wasn't very good and kept everyone waiting for months

Hibike - Yuribaiting leading to all sorts of retardation from all of /a/

Death Parade - Too many people say it's pretentious which is true to some extent but it also went off the rails at the end making me lose interest super quick

Oregairu S2 - Do I even have to say it?

Yes, of course. Watch them in the aired order. All of the ARIA seasons serve a purpose. The Animation introduces the characters, The Natural is mostly world building and then The Origination contains character development which is only really emotionally powerful if you've already grown attached to the characters by watching the first two seasons.

The more baffling thing to me is why GochiUsa is the most popular of any of the anime you mentioned in Japan. It's by far the most generic, shallow, HOLY SHIT LOOK AT HOW FUCKING CUTE THESE GIRLS ARE SoL I've seen since Acchi Kocchi. Oh. Right. That's exactly why. The only thing its sales reflect is the long pause between seasons. Working!!! suffered a huge sales hit for the same reason despite being by far the best season of the show.
