Our university has a sign in thing, swipe your card so they know you're attending. It's bs because I'm 90% sure the all artsy subjects don't have to do it, whereas physics and maths students like myself get called to meetings if attendance drops below 80%.
As if it wasn't easy enough having 8 hours of contact time, they don't even have to turn up.

Oh please. Half the courses I did at uni covered basic shit I've known since I was 12. I don't need to take half a dozen courses on how to program or do high-school tier calculus, but evidently other people do because they're course requirements. Are you seriously saying there wasn't even one course at your university that covered basic shit you already knew? Why even get a degree in the subject if you didn't care enough to learn about it beforehand? I'd much rather focus on courses that were actually teaching me shit I didn't already know.

Funnily enough the only subjects I've had which marked on attendance (through shit like 'clicker questions') were first and second year shit that had hundreds of students, none of the smaller classes gave a shit.
