not sure if slice of life is entirely correct as there's more to it than that, this is hardly everyday life as we know it. It's a shipwreck/castaway story as Ledo adjusts to living among 'savages', it's a slice of their life. I think people were disappointed as they were expecting a mecha action show

But slice of life isn't incompatible with further exploration of the setting, in fact, it's the best mean of doing so, but they fail to offer any deeper insight until the few last chapters in which they also rush the plot to reach the climax of the story.

I think IG lacked the production values to really make the series work as a whole. The iyashikei bits depended really heavily on the atmosphere and aesthetics of the ship, but it wandered into quality and bland stock backgrounds so frequently that the aesthetic was somewhat lost. It needed to look good all the way through in order to really sell its narrative concept and instead it only looked decent when something important was happening.

His own knowledge was completely limited to combat, though. He had next to no knowledge of anything else, having not needed it. Even the robot likely didn't have much actual instructional knowledge on a lot of things, both having been bred and built for combat and that alone. Having knowledge of how to build certain things or process certain other things or generate certain kinds of energy in safe environments would be useless information for a combat bot in a war. I'm sure, with his vast computational power and extremely potent sensory equipment he could likely have analyzed and put lots of shit together, but on the other hand, there's not much reason for him to. His allegiance was solely to his pilot, who in turn was most of the time attempting to not integrate too heavily into this completely backwards society outside of what he needed to survive and perhaps rejoin the war.

They might not be space university level but they should have relevant information and the ideology of a united mankind from their society means that making them integrate is a high ranking priority when no squids are about.
