Why are anime that happen in far future or in space so goddamn rare?

Considering how Gundam is the most profitable anime related franchise ever made and it's pretty much Star Wars with mecha why won't more studios try to make similar series?

Even SoL shows would be better if they happened 300 years in the future or on some alien planets.

They were pretty popular back in the 90's/00's. The industry is sort of burn out on it overall as it rides new fads in order to stay afloat.

Maybe in another decade we'll swing back to drama/exploration-oriented anime, but it's off the table for now.

Also, comparatively, sci-fi anime is something of an ass for a studio to produce originally because of its fair need to get a lot of original sci-fi designs drawn up and finalized for production for a high initial cost/effort before you even start animation.

It's ridiculously easy to cram practically anything you want in because it's more of a setting with a broad story than a story with different set pieces.

The simplest reason is because nowadays it's way easier to produce some fanservice LN adaptation of over-sexualized high school students talking at each other endlessly about stupid shit only shut in otaku can relate to and market exclusively to them and their obsession on the cheap for probably solid returns. This is a direct result of feeding their simple egocentric fantasies usually centered around what they can immediately comprehend which is usually cute girls and self-insert power fantasies involving them as opposed to coming up with something truly imaginative and more complicated in scope that will probably have to contend with the expectations of a mainstream audience who probably wouln't even give a sci-fi anime the time of day the way they would a sci-fi flick from Hollywood in order to be successful because in the minds of the average Japanese person anime is fucking dogshit for social rejects, arguably an increasingly justifiably these days given what seems to get the most popular in anime circles and what is getting made at an increasingly mass production rate.

Some series like Gundam achieve that and become immensely successful, many countless more do not and never will making it a waste of time, money and efforts.

That's not what I mean. The anime audience in 2015 is a pretty specific group, and something being huge in the mainstream isn't that good an indicator of how it would do with anime viewers, so I don't think you'll get a wave of copycats trying to ride Star Wars' coattails or anything.

Maybe if Darth Vader were gender swapped into a cute girl with drill hair and the mask was taken down to like say the wrestler Vader levels of face coverage and then ditched entirely after a few scenes and this Vader's tragic sob story origin was introduced quicker and they played up the death scene about a hundred times more sappy and melodramatic instead of just what happens at the end of Return of The Jedi it might play well with anime audiences.

90% of those harem shows sell like shit. Even the top ones only sell okay. 6-8k is considered very good for LN adaptations these days.

I stopped reading there by the way.

In case you haven't noticed most more ambitious anime we see are paced and/or look like complete dogshit because the budget of a random anime TV series can't support them. It's also part of why LN adaptions tend to only get one season either, because later volumes up the content into things they can't afford to animate either (see trainwrecks where they tried like DAL II and Shana Final)
