So, if you're writing an instructional book aimed at parents, then readability is a primary focus. Small blocks of text, large font, simple language, unassuming vocabulary, succinct style and straightforward grammar are all necessary. Being able to reduce the amount of text per page to only a few small paragraph blocks and dedicating the rest to carefully cherrypicked images is a big plus.
I'll say it's actually a virtue that the author managed to be as brief and clear as he was with the subject. It can be difficult to explain things, especially obscure cultural differences, in a few small sentences. While he didn't exactly do a lot of those topics justice, it's admirable that he even managed to finish an idea in approximately the amount of attention span the average american adult can commit to a single train of thought.
