There's a lot of Gundam shows. That naturally means there's a lot of shit and a lot of good shows.
Macross, on the other hand, despite its reputation as one of the more popular mecha franchises, doesn't have so much entries, and this can be a good or bad depending on how you think about it. Having new entries after years passed since the last entry helps to not make viewers tired of it, and announcing a new entry pretty generates hype for it naturally, because it doesn't come regularly like Gundam, it doesn't reach that point where you don't really feel excited for it.
Personally, Gundam reached the point where I go, "Oh, another Gundam series" when I hear news about a new series(GBF was different though, the gunpla angle helped in making it interesting and hype things up). Macross, by putting time between each series, doesn't make viewers somewhat tired of it. My reaction to the news of Delta was "Hey, it's been a while since the last entry, I hope this is good"
And mecha design wise, Gundam has good-looking humanoid robots, but the ones that "transform" usually looks weird when you look at their belly in MA mode, while Macross has planes that actually transform, their humanoid form might look weird, but they are planes before robots. It's all up to your taste in robots.
