If we consider that an average episode has 22 * 60 * 24 = 31680 frames, and it takes around 2 minutes to run a 1080p frame through Waifu2x on an average PC, it would take around 50 days to upscale an entire episode 6x and around 2 years to do it for an entire anime.

Considering the resulting size, the raw images would take around .75TB for a single episode.

So it isn't really out of reach. Who's down?

Just 2x takes around 10 seconds, that's around 4 days for an episode and 52 days for a series. Much easier to accomplish.

2x as in nearest neighbour interpolation? That shouldn't take more than a fraction of a second per frame on a modern PC, anon; it's practically instant and is probably the worst possible filter for rescaling quality-wise.

I'm sure you don't have to upscale every frame. You should just upscale key frames and modify the rest of the data in video file and it should be faster and look way better than double encoded episode.
Just read about codecs and write a program to do it for you.

We need video-specific algorithm. It's not like every frame has to be processed independently, just like video codecs don't store complete frames.

Key frames used for animation and intra frames used for compression have nothing to do with each other, you can't automatically detect and upscale only the key frames.

If you meant key frames as in intra frames, you still can't upscale individual I-frames in most modern (post-MPEG-2) video formats because the subsequent predicted frames would also have to be scaled up. Since macroblocks have fixed sizes, that means you have to reencode those frames into new macroblocks, and since the upscaling algorithm will have changed the original image you'll need to recalculate all the motion vectors and suddenly you're basically just reencoding the entire frame.

I don't think you're stupid, though. If your scaling algorithm is such that you can also interpolate the motion compensation vectors for the predicted blocks, you would indeed save a lot of time, but I don't think you could do it with a NN-based scaler like Waifu2x.

Yes, I meant intraframes.
The change in image(except for size) will be insignificant so recalculating motion vectors and stuff should be pretty easy. Also it should give better results than doing it per frame, because these algorythms(codecs?) that take these intraframes and other data to calculate all the frames aren't perfect, so encoding them once again will double the imperfections. I'm not sure how to properly word, but I'm sure you will get what I meant.

Currently I don't have enough time for this, but this is a project I would love to start in near future.

So fucking this.
I've seen people going apeshit about this and talking about using it for upscaling video, but it truly sucks for anything that isn't a clean still image.
It's nice toy for people interested in neural networks, but we already have better and more efficient image doubling algorithm for actual use.
