You guys weren't joking around with the whole waxing philosophical shit, I can't even believe how much of the dialogue is dedicated to these pointless quotes
I thought it was pretty good after the extremely slow start (basically everything up until they go to the yakuza place), but the quoting almost legitimately ruined it for me

Another thing, I actually paused the movie and laughed for a solid minute at this line

Yes its rather infamous for being obtuse in that regard.
Ironically it is a much more subtle and emotional film than the first though.

I thought it was way less subtle
The first movie is drawing all the parallels between the major and what's his face throughout the whole movie, it has a nice buildup
This movie doesn't really have much in the way of super subtle story telling as far as I can tell

I'm talking about the characters and the theme of the film. You don't have 8 minute scenes of Batou doing nothing but petting his dog in the first film.

Well that was kind of my point
That scene in particular struck me as far too drawn out; it does nothing to establish batou's character other than "he really really loves his fucking dog" and it drags on forever
Unless his love for his dog is supposed to parallel his respect for the major or some shit but I'm really just guessing at this point

The dog represents love that isn't overanalyzed or deconstructed by technology. One of the most prevalent themes of the film is that if the human soul is completely deconstructed by science in the form of new electronic bodies and minds, then they have brought the concept of love down to earth so to speak. Since the dog is not human and does not have an ego, it is seen as innocent of sin, other symbols that serve this purpose is the elephant mentioned repeatedly throughout the film. Batou's affection for the dog is analgous to the obsession of certain characters to the dolls, the dolls are also meant to be innocent creatures that have no ego. The movie asserts that people try to reclaim their innocence in the morally degenrate cyberpunk society by seeking dolls, animals, or children.

More literally, the dog serves as an anchor for Batou in a world where cybernetic illusion and paradoxes make reality rather ambiguous. I'm not accusing you of having a bias against the film, but I don't think that a sequence such as this needs to have some critical addition to the characters. One of the most important aspects of this scene is simply aesthetic and art direction, it shows the new CGI method of animating the movie, the cyberpunk architecture and atmosphere, and is meant to allow the audience to sympathize with Batou more.

The first wasn't preachy at all. It was philosophical dialogue, but not that heavy on it because it had a lot to do with the purpose of the film. I'd even argue the same with Innocence. Perhaps a bit much for the latter, but still relevant.

I'm not biased against the movie at all, I mostly enjoyed it
I mean I get that not every single second of the movie has to be dripping with foreshadowing or whatever, but spending this extremely long drawn out scene that has really nothing interesting visually going on just for aesthetics seems like wankery

I wouldn't consider the first movie preachy by any stretch. First of all, what someone considers pretentious can really really vary and certainly becomes more noticeable in an anime low on action or production values. Gits didn't even have that much dialogue to begin with, but the stuff it did have was certainly relevant to the themes of the story. I have also found that every part of Innocence was also relevant to the image its trying to promote, but theres a matter of execution quality that can be debated. Noticeably, Innocence can be divided into several main scenes in which there is a critical conversation featured toward the end and usually some stark visual component that makes the scene unique and memorable.
For example, the super white crime lab from the beginning, the entrance into that city with the festival, the doll house etc. I think this movie may be misunderstood at times because the aesthetic design of the movie is just as important to its presentation as the dialogue or the story. When I read some reviews, this isnt even touched on.
