Yeah, I think the hatching has it's sort of old school charm to it. In anything, it takes more time for Oda to hatch than it would for him to just give the page to one of his assistants to shade

You're not supposed to use shading in a shounen manga, all the new artist that come to work with Shueisha receive directives from their editors to not use shading because people associate it with seinen manga and gives overall grim feeling to it.

He means it was originally in color before it was monochromed, which is what gives way to the shading effect in those pages.

But look at any other of the pages in Romance Dawn and you'll see the same thing-- occasional screentones and mostly hatching.

Secondly, if you've seen the RAWs, you'd realize that the digital cleaning process that scanlators use makes things often look a lot cleaner than they would on a printed page. This typically interferes with the illusory effect that hatching is suppose to play on your eyes since hatching is typically intended to look "dirty" so that it resembles shading.

I'd say it has more to do with compositional changes than improvement/degradation. The things he draws now are just always more "busy" than compared to how things were in the beginning, so emphasis pieces are few and far between.

Do you people not know that the art of almost every manga you read a fucking (mostly shitty these days) scan of has been basically destroyed through the cleaning process? They use all kinds of timesaving techniques to clean up the quality of the shit scans, losing a lot of detail.
