Every time something is obtusely expressed or the plot makes your brain scream, you take a sip/shot. The strength of your memory on these set of particular rules and the type of liquor plus measured liquor allotments you have for every ruled grievance decides how shitfaced you want to get in as few minutes.

Anytime lain sees a humanoid, ghostlike apparition. Take an extra sip if it looks tormented or in pain.
Anytime someone dies while playing tag.
Anytime lain's sister makes modem noises.
Anytime lain has a good ol' heart to heart talk with her Dad.
Anytime you see lain walking out of her front door and walking down the Stairs That Aren't Really There.
Anytime someone starts to hallucinate or freak out. Take an extra gulp if they die/vanish soon after.
Anytime you see that freaky little Roswell alien in the "Where's Waldo" shirt. (Take an extra gulp if the freaky little alien has lain's head.)
Anytime lain can see her evil twin.

Anytime a child is being waaay too precocious for its own good.

Anytime the producers of the show wield symbolism like a blunt instrument.
Anytime someone professes love for lain.
Anytime lain professes love for anyone else.
Anytime a character has an inappropriate attraction for another character.
Anytime a Man in Black is shown wearing anything other than black.
Anytime MIB Karl takes off his visor thingy and you get to see his bea-yoot-i-ful blue eyes.
Anytime someone kisses lain.

Anytime lain speaks to someone while in the wired. Take an extra gulp if said person consists of only a body part (a mouth or an ear).

For every loose plot element which seems to be going nowhere. (Take an extra drink if it actually DOES go somewhere.)
Anytime someone mentions something about the "collective unconscious".
Anytime the Knights are mentioned.
Anytime a Knight is seen.
Anytime a Knight dies.
Anytime lain sees any of her classmates all grown up.
Anytime they show power lines buzzing. Down a whole bottle if the power lines happen to be dripping with blood.
At every point in layer 11 when you think to yourself, "Sheesh! I could play the electric guitar better than that!"
At that point in the final layer when the "present day, present time" sequence fires up and you find yourself thinking "Oh NO! The entire series is starting all over again! ARRGGGHH!!!!"
Anytime your brain starts to hurt.

Okay, so I've taken the basic idea of the drinking game and tried to make it into something that's concise enough to memorise. I take no responsibility for any death caused by following these rules.

Take a drink every time one of these things occurs.

2deep4me difficulty:
(Essentially drinking whenever you see something which is also symbolic of something else,
as a reward to yourself for further understanding it)
1. Whenever Lain sees Lain.
2. Whenever someone else sees Lain's evil twin.
3. Whenever Lain sees Chisa.
4. Whenever you see Lain in a bearsuit. Bonus drink if what you 'see' is a bear.
5. Whenever you see an alien. Bonus drink if the alien is Lain. Another bonus drink if the alien is wearing a sweater
6. Whenever you see Mika. Bonus drink if she's making modem noises.
7. Whenever Lain's computer has been upgraded.
8. Whenever someone receives a literal physical package of information. Bonus drink if it's received orally.

3drinks4me difficulty:

9. Whenever Lain speaks to someone while in the wired.
