Main cast might not be likable at first but the more you know them, the more you care. Plot was quite good. Especially that part about best orchestrated
suicide in any manga/manhwa/book i ever have read.
Artstyle might look like shit but author is trying. It's not Kubo, who despite being gifted is too lazy to draw backgrounds or few characters in one page. Author of Ares was able to draw hundreds of soldiers and horses in one page and that was remarkable.
Another thing is combat pragmatism. Okay it's not a strict rule but was often used. Battles in general were nicely done, with victory depending on multiple factors (strategy, numbers of soldiers, environment elements, "special soldiers")
It also contains fair share of good duels, with fight on pair with opponent. And dues before big battles were actual tradition in some European countries.
What's else was good? Definitely general Icarus, that dude in on pair with Gotho from Patlabor.
Usage of weak and not important characters. Small comedy stuff making everything not bleak. Interesting look at warrior/rulers pride.
Historical in-consequences quickly stop being eyesore.
