The side materials add more meat to the story but you can watch the anime just fine without them

The only really necessary one is the K Countdown manga which takes place between the movie and S2 but its only 8 chapters long

the anime is enjoyable but a bit hard to follow if you haven't read the side material.

memory of red and days of blue will get you to the start of the anime timeline but are also very slow-moving and mostly characterization for all the semi-useless infantry dudes in the show.

Red = The King of Destruction, wants to destroy the slates
Blue = The King of Order, wants to control them
Green = The King of Change, wants to release them

We have yet to see what Shiro wants to do with them, and I think it will have something to do with the paperwork his sister left behind for him
