In Japan, cartoons like Spongebob and Family Guy are all considered Anime.
But in America, they're not.
Why is this?

Because anime is a short way to say animation, you can air some old russian animation in japan and still be anime.

It's very simple. We are not Japanese, so when we say anime we are referring specifically to Japanese cartoons hence why we borrowed the Japanese word.

In shirt Anime in English=/= Anime in Japanese

The japanese word anime is not the same word as the japanese to english loanword "anime"

However, for ambiguous cases, the term "japanese anime" does exist.
