The battle scenes in Maria were for once well directed and the fantasy elements made sense. It's my AOTY so far with Hibike a close second. But honestly NNB had better single episodes than anything else this entire year.

Hibike is far better. Kekkai has little going for it except for a cool soundtrack and a cool concept. It also has a fucking terrible first and second episode. I don't even know how anyone kept watching after those two.

I'll chalk it up to different preferences then. One of the things I liked about Kekkai was that it had far less battle scenes than I expected, I just can't find action very compelling. The theology aspect of Maria was interesting and it was certainly one of the stronger shows that season but I suppose I set my expectations too high because it had the same director as Planetes.

The first thing in Kekkai Sensen is an uninspired interview piece where basically all of the interesting features of the setting are given away immediately. This interview takes place between two noncharacters and therefore does nothing to progress the plot or the characters in any way, and only serves to tell us things that we didn't need to know. Then we come into contact with are protag and are given more unnecessary information about his backstory, completely removing any mystery from him as well.
This is pretty much the worst thing you can do to start off the series.

The second half of the episode isn't nearly so bad, but the monster fight is still incredibly confusing with almost no sense of stakes or consequence. It's basically an exposition episode and that's pretty much the worst first episode imaginable.

I liked Kekkay Sensen as a whole, but every piece of its comedy fell absolutely flat for me with the exception of Zapp's boner. I read a few chapters of the manga, too, but I think the comedy aspects are meant for other people.

What? It barely told us anything beyond the most basic premise and the stuff about the collapse which would come into play at the end. Having two aliens discuss the city in a talk show was probably the best way it could have been handled, it was a way of showing the aliens integrated into society and much more preferable to one of those character explains everything to MC scenes. Literally everyone already knows about HL. MC's backstory needed to be put out of the way to explain his eyes and why Libra would allow him to be a member, dangling it in front of the audience and waiting to tell them would have been stupid with the episodic format.

What's a interview piece? I think you mean media-res which is essentially what the first few minutes of the show is giving you hints of things to come in the story. The exposition given between two aliens was a good way to explain the setting without getting heavy handed into exposition so it doesn't feel unnatural for a random characer to come in and explain shit everyone should already know.

This makes you sound like a pretentious twat, there was nothing confusing becase the first half explained what the monster was and why they needed to destroy it, its essentially what gets our protag into the setting in the first place.

No, we really don't. A guy with magic eyeballs in an interesting situation is good enough for me. And you definitely don't need to give away the whole tragic backstory immediately when it could have been a good reveal later.

I was confused because I didn't understand how often a threat like this occurred. The thing seems to be leveling city blocks but that might be a normal thing in HSL? I just don't know.
I probably wouldn't care so much about this if the beginning of the episode were better.

Actually we do, this is actually the biggest fault for a lot of anime in which we're not given an immediate set up from the get go and instead they drag it on leading up to nothing. Leo is not a complex character and in the first episode we learn why he's in the city, his backstory and his role in story in comparison to UBW where it takes 6 episodes to really get a hand on who Shirou is and the ulitmate conlusion to his character winds up being nothing as a result so you made us waste on this time on a character that was never interesting to begin with.

This is explained and show in the episode, its really your fault if the show goes out of its way to tell you its setting which is why your criticisms really doesn't hold any weight.

The alien talk show was showing it visually rather than explaining it. I think it's preferable.

Introducing elements right when you use them is cheap, if they had to include the collapse plot at all then introducing it in the beginning was the right decision because there was no good point to insert it into the episodic stories before it became relevant. There is no reason to wait for the eyeball explanation, it's ridiculous to introduce the MC as a normal person but then have him do all this flashy stuff with his eyes and just say "don't worry about it, it's just a thing", and the boss needed to know this information before letting a stranger into his secret organization anyway. Not to mention the firs episode was adapting a 3 chapter mini-series that wasn't serialized until later, so the author pretty much had to lay out the premise there.

Zapp says "this guy again" when Femt comes on-screen and his ranting is very conspicuously ignored by all onlookers so you can assume it happens fairly often.

If Kekkai had flopped like Death Parade or Rokka no Yuusha (two very good shows, mind you), people would be playing the "underdog syndrome" and the shitposting would be a lot less cancerous. But since it sold a lot in Japan (much more than anyone could predict at the beginning of the season) and was well received by the MAL, Reddit, ANN and others vehicles that some /a/nons hate, the backlash was almost inevitable. I don't care if people didn't like it as much as did, but some arguments are just bait of the weakest order.

After hearing this meme for so long I actually decided to watch it, and no, it's not aoty.
It has good art, but that's about it.
It's not bad, but there is no substance, there is nothing to it.
It's not exactly boring, but there is just nothing to it.
Pretty much any other show this year that actually had a plot a is better than NNB
It's pretty much just a gimmick anime meant to resonate with people because of subject matter.

A show aiming to be mediocre will be just that, mediocre.
SoL is just a gimmick genre. You don't need to have a plot, you just need characters, that doesn't mean it's bad, but that doesn't mean it's suddenly good either, it's just a "safe" story telling method, there is no risk in SoL.

The episodic stories are the ones they should be focusing on. I'm pretty sure most people were pissed when they decided to devote two episodes to the stupid anime original plot when they could have used them to adapt two more manga chapters instead.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to call them bad but those were kind of edgy. The one with the schoolgirl and the male idol was the best one. Death Parade had a strong premise but it's biggest flaw was that it didn't have enough episodes to properly handle the plot it was introducing with Nona and the old guy.

Yes, but you can explain it in smarter ways than expositing it. You don't have to explain that there are strange creatures in the world, you can just show it. You can create investment in the characters by simply having them be in an engaging situation, you don't need to explain their whole life stories immediately.

Jojo's, Shokugeki, Rokka, Fate, Kuroko, Shigatsu's second half, Parasyte's second half, DRRR!!x2 Shou and Ten, Oregairu, Saenai Heroine, Hibike!, Death PArade, Overlord, Prison School, Junketsu, Cross Ange Second half, Arslan Senki, Ore Monogatari, Yamada-kun, Akagami no Shirayuki-hime, hell even the airing stuff (owarimonogatari, one punch man, Utawarerumono, MSG:IBO, the perfect insider, Haikyuu!! 2nd season, and attack on titan junior high are better than kekkai. Kekkai didn't really have any good writing and the story wasn't interesting. It was cool, and that's it. No depth to the characters leaves it at a nice average/10. Definitely not AOTY

I agree, and I disagree with that anon's assertion that his backstory was to have you care because it's clearly too early for you to feel emotion for this character you don't know yet. It's meant to be an explanation for the reason why he's accepted by Libra, which is the premise of the story.

I explained why. What part's unclear? Look, they are part of an organization whose function revolves around the supernatural aspect of the city and they have also presumably been there for years, or they could even have come out of the Beyond. They are not the outsider and have nor reason to explain themselves. MC was stated to be from out of town and only arrived recently, he is coming into a scenario where the others already know each other but they don't know him.
