At the start of the game he's written with the exact same sort of naive optimism about friendship and togetherness that they all had in Peace Walker, which contrasts well with how everybody else in mother base went off the deep end and became villains. Then, as the game goes on, you find that he's just as monstrous any everybody else there, with the only difference being that he absolutely refuses to ever acknowledge the consequences of his actions. After a certain point it doesn't even matter whether or not he betrayed MSF, because what he did after joining Diamond Dogs alone is reason enough to hate him.
On top of that, this characterization also shines a new light on how he behaved in Peace Walker. Thinking back, you get the sense that he's always been like this, and that it just never came through because there was nothing in that game to bring it to the surface. It also makes sense now that he eventually kills himself, which seemed really out of character when he was first introduced.
Overall, he's a very deeply flawed character, which I think is neat.
