Getting on disability

I doubt /adv/ is the best place to ask, but I'm 27, living with parents, and a NEET. Also American.

How do I get on disability or SSI? While something to help me live without me needing to work with a job that makes my depression worse would be nice, just being able to get some pills would be nice, too. Also dealing with the $40+k and mounting student loan debt I got from going to a fake college.

My friend on disability (in the UK) tells me that they do backpay, but I worry that I'll spend months filling out forms and then get told no.

For SSI, most likely you'll get told no the first time. That's why there are dedicated law firms for getting disability.

Still, if you can get it and stay on for two years you can get medicare. That's not bad.

My brother's girlfriend has been on for years for psych. She can even work and go to school... though if she earns too much she has to pay back.

Sure it does. It just has to be severe enough to prevent you from working. Lots of people get SSI for psych disorders.

They'll probably tell you no after a few months of waiting. I wouldn't bother. The best thing you can do is try to change your habits and get a job.

Well, lucky me, I've had one real job, had it for less than six months, was constantly scaled back in hours as if I were some 16 year old, and after dealing with nightmares of making sandwiches and a overbearing ass of a boss I quit. Or was fired. I don't really know.

You're going to need an expansive and thorough medical documentation of your illness. That means a lot of doctor visits and trying to treat your depression. If you don't have insurance apply for Medicaid and get started on that because it will probably be years before you've tried enough that they'll accept it.

What disability are you claiming to have? Unemployment? That's not an officially recognized disability (yet). Depression? You would need medical evidence that it is severe, ongoing and incurable - in effect, you would be choosing to have yourself officially labelled mentally incapable of functioning, just to avoid having to get a job.

If you feel like going through the next 60 years of your life carrying that label, go ahead.

I don't recall any of the specifics, as I won't even use an acquaintance's EBT card with permission for a free snack, but try searching for "uncle remuses guide to disability" or something.

It's a very well-written and thorough guide on how to never work again through use of gub'mint money.

The state that you're in will likely have a big impact. Doing research for pleasure, I've learned that fewer than 2k people total in my state of Georgia actually receive cash from social services in any capacity.

First of all it does matter what state you live in, hopefully it's not completely backwards.

Some day soon, you go outside, you strip down to your birthday suit and you start walking down the street, talking loudly about whatever the fuck comes to your mind. They will come and get you. You will be locked up for a little while, probably drugged too. If you can make it clear you are unemployable yet also not a danger to yourself or others, you will then get cuckoo checks.
