When I go to craigslist for apartments in big cities I always find ones really cheap. Are they scams or in ghettos or what?

The really cheap ones are scams, yeah. You should do some research on neighborhoods to make sure you're not moving into "the ghetto." And then you'll find there's like, an average baseline price for apartments in that neighborhood. If you look at the right time of the month, you can get lucky and find a good one for like $200-$300 under that average. But if it's "too good to be true," it's too good to be true

look at the big apartment websites and see what complexes are advertising there and see what the rents are

look at the places in the city where they are located

you need somebody who knows the city I live in seattle area and could tell you what parts are way cheaper than others because surprise it is a shitty part of town

I would never commit to an apartment without having a sense of the city.

Consider renting a furnished apartment on a month-to-month basis at first, while looking around. It might cost more, but will save you from big problems later.
