Cover Letter

What is a cover letter and how I write one?

This chocolate lounge downtown is hiring a full time dishwasher at $11 an hour. A friend of mine works there and she might be able to put a good word in for me but I only have retail experience.

Please help me get this job /adv/. I'm so fucking poor.

Cover letter is basically a couple paragraphs expressing your interest in the position/company and explaining in more detail than your resume what experience/traits/qualifications you have that would make you a good fit for the position. It's raining rather silly they'd make you do one to be a dishwasher though. Is it optional?

From my experience, it's a brief summary of your skills that would match the job you're applying for. Make sure to write it in formal letter format.

Isn't that typically stuff you'd discuss in the interview? Seems kinda superfluous, really.

And nah, the ad wants resume and cover letter.

I feel kinda stupid applying when I zero experience, but it can't be that difficult, right? The job would just be washing dishes, busing tables and cleaning.

Not really superfluous. It's usually a way for HR/recruiting to sort through several applications and get a better idea of the applicant, and then choose from there. When you interview you are usually talking with someone else (the hiring manager) who most likely didn't read it so it's all new to them.

I'm not sure what you could say for yours since you don't have any experience. Have you done volunteer work that could be relatable or something?

I've always wanted to go into culinary arts/baking and this place is kinda the most famous thing in my city. It'd be great exposure to the food industry.

I guess I kinda shot myself in the foot working at a thrift store instead of starbucks or something when I was a teenager.

I honestly don't know how I'm supposed to get experience in things when all of the jobs require experience.

Utility workers are the backbone of the industry my friend, and no one wants to work those positions.

If I paid a dishwasher 11 dollars an hour...In my chocolate lounge... You better fucking believe I wouldn't be hiring under the same standards as a run of the mill dishwasher.

The job might have upward mobility, and at 11 dollars, make your cover letter shine. Anyone can do the job, but that doesn't mean that anyone WILL do the job.

I'll cross my fingers for you brother. A desire for hard work, and an honest input are 10x better than someone with experience founded on shaky principles. I know people who claim to have 10+ years in the industry... It don't mean shit.

Also, the industry is high stress. I also believe the generally accepted cutoff for entering into the food industry is 30 years old with no experience. That doesn't mean that there aren't any exceptions though.

Anyone with a healthy body, and a healthy mind can do what they put their mind towards.

Any tips for cover letter ass kissing?

The only real experience I think would transfer is I deal with heavy boxes, like 50lbs+ for a good part of the day at my current job. Why I make minimum wage is beyond me.

It needs to sound sincere man, that is what they are going to look for if you don't have experience.
Put that you have have experience with manual labor, and cite your job experience.
Write what you were mentioning earlier about desiring to get into the industry in an earlier post. And have open availability, make it abundantly clear to them that you are going to work well for them. Open availability and a desire to work is a commodity. Lacking availability, and seemingly insincere is a liability.

-No, you wouldn't write that. But that's essentially the message you want to deliver, so find a more polished way of saying the same thing.
