I have an exam in a week on Japanese Culture and Society. The exam consists of 1 essay, 3 short answer questions and 20 multichoice questions.

The difference with this exam to other ones I've had in the past is that it's open book, meaning we can bring in any material we want as long as it's on paper; no electronic devices. Does anyone have any tips on making sheets to bring in for this sort of thing? I've done history exams before but never had one that's open book like this.

Can you type it? If so use smallest font
If not write it small as possible (obv)

Try to make a first draft study note first and when you have assembled all ur info and checked with ppl only then move info onto study sheet

The thing about open book exams, is that you usually don't have time to sit there and flick through your notes to find the answer. In that sense, they're not truly open book, because you need to be familiar enough with the material that you can answer most of it without referring to your notes. Don't think that you can get away with not studying just because you can take any material you want in with you. I recommend making concise notes, accompanied by quick summaries of each topic. Do a practice exam using the notes, and if there's something about your notes that makes doing the exam difficult, tweak them.

Yeah, our lecturer made the observation that last year a student brought in 5 textbooks to the exam. I think I grasp most of the material pretty well and years of arguing on the internet have contributed a bit to my ability to write an argumentative essay.

When I had classes that allowed this, I would have a sheet of notes with "quick info" and if I needed more in-depth stuff, I also included a page number for the textbook. It was basically my own detailed glossary and it worked well.

That's a good idea, thanks man. Our course doesn't actually have a prescribed textbook, so I would probably have to find a good, wide ranging textbook to borrow from the library to use for that, might give that a go.
