I have my base case and all that but I'm stuck on the algebra trying to figure out how to make
(8^(n+1) - 8) / 7) + 8^(n+1) = 8^(n+1+1) - 8) / 7

First, split the S i=1 to n+1 into S i=1 to n + 8^(+n1). Then substitute the summation with (8^(n+1)-8)/7. Then multiply the 8^(n+1) by 7/7 so you can collect everything in the numerator.

8^(n+1) + 7 * 8^(n+1) gives 8 * 8^(n+1), i.e. 8^(n+1+1)

Based on how you've written it, the equality is not true.

Assumption case: (8^n) = ((8^(n+1) - 8) / 7)

Substitute n+1 for n:
(8^(n+1)) = ((8^(n+2) - 8) / 7)

Divide both sides by 8:
(8^n)

Substitute our assumption case for 8^n:
((8^(n+1) - 8) / 7) = ((8^(n+1) - 1) / 7)

Which is obviously not true. I hope your question allows for the equality to be false.

Ugh, where I say "divide both sides by 8" it should be followed with (8^n) = ((8^(n+1) - 1) / 7)
