Things to do in North Carolina

I'm from Germany and my University will send me to Chapel Hill (UNC) for one month to study and to visit some High School, I study Education here in Germany.

I would like to extend my stay in the US and A and travel four or five days. Any ideas what to do in North Carolina? I love the beach.

So far I would like to visit Washington D.C. and Outer Banks with an rental car.

Hitting both DC and Cape Hatteras in 4 days is gonna be rough. Doable, but rough.
There are some nice lighthouses out that way, some historic sites as well where they might talk up some pirate stories. Other than that, yeah, beaches and nature preserves.

NC native here. The outer banks are definitely worth seeing, especially the light houses. Ocracoak island island is where Blackbeard the pirate used to hang out. Blowing rock in the Boone area is pretty cool. Pilot mountain, the mile high swinging bridge at Grandfather mountain is pretty awesome too. Fall time the leaves are beautiful. Winston-Salem has Old Salem which is where the original Moravian settlers settled in NC. Tons of stuff to see.
