help me sort a work issue out ethics issue /adv/ice

I work for the city. I make 11.00 an hour doing really easy work. the problem i have is that my latest paycheque is an egregious error in my favor. they paid me for 125 hours instead of 25 hours. My boss fills out the time sheets for everyone in the department . I'm not sure if it's an error on her end or a payroll error.

What should I do about this? What is the correct thing to do? The money is already in my bank account.

On one hand, you really should let someone at payroll know what happened. They'll get their money back one way or another.

On the other hand, you can probably lie your way through it if you put at least a little bit of forethought into it. Say that your boss has been making you work off the clock for the past couple months and promised that you'd get reimbursed eventually, so you thought that this was your big reimbursement.

I'm actually concerned about how they're going to get it back. they've already taken taxes out of it and i already put it in a savings account so i hope they can right the error and not fuck me in the ass by making me double pay those taxes or make me work for free for the next paycheck.

They can claim it back through a lawsuit if you don't come forward. It might get to court, or it might be dealt with privately through lawyers, but they can claim it back if it was due to a mistake. They'll probably just have you reimburse the money, though I don't know how tax would work in to it. I really would suggest letting them know and making sure the money is available for when it happens, don't spend it because that will really fuck you over.

Put the money in a high interest account immediately, for 1 or 2 months. Then tell your boss you noticed too much money in your account and could they check it out. This will probably take some time but in the meantime you're earning a little bit of interest in your bank. Dude usually what happens is they say, "Hey, please give us the money back" and it only goes to court if you say no. Nobody wants to hire a lawyer over $1,000, even the city. Just mark it as "do not use under any circumstances" and put it in the SP500 or just a treasury bond that you can sell if need be to pay them back. Obviously do not spend that shit on hookers and blow, but you may be able to earn a bit of interest or capital gains before they claim it, especially if it's like a year later

Not really. I don't care that much about the money. I just wanted to know what other people's opinions ethically were because i asked my father and he basically said to keep it and claim to be oblivious.
I basically don't want to deal with the headache of having to tell my boss and get it sorted out where i don't get fucked by paying taxes twice and i don't have to work for free because these idiots made a mistake.

At the end of the day OP, you have something which is not rightfully yours.
You could spend all the money and hope for the best, this is one option but I advise against it.
You could tell your boss and see what he says, but like you say you will have paid a higher rate of tax as a higher income so this will be a challenge.
Of you can put all of the excess money in to a separate high interest savings account that you can access immediately when you need to, then tell your boss. - this way, you are being honest but telling your boss. Secondly, you are benefiting off the excess money by earning interest on it. If your boss says you need to give it back then you can so there's no issues there. If your boss says keep the money but you need to work until you have earned it, then you can do that too all the while you're earning interest and you can keep paying yourself with it each week.
OP if you've come here asking for advice, there's enough here for you to make a smart decision. Don't be stupid.

Another option for you could be that you pay it back by working extra hours or something. There's so many options other than quitting and running away with the cash or hoping for the best and keeping quiet about it. Your boss may even say keep the money as a bonus. It may be a test to prove your honesty, you really don't know.
However if it's a test, sounds like you failed it.

I have never said I was going to keep it and hope for the best tehehe. I doubt they'd catch this but I know if I go to them the solutions are all less than ideal . The best option is putting it into a savings account which i've already done and hoping I make out about the same in the tax aspect.

All of you people saying don't take advantage of you're bosses stupidity have good intentions, but noticing that kind of thing isn't going to do you any favors. In addition to not getting the money, you get your bosses wrath for making him look foolish. Precisely the situation you describe - someone else giving you money by mistake and you not giving it back - is listed in the laws on theft and defined as theft. Depending on your state and how much you make per hour, 100 hours' worth could qualify as Grand Theft.

Here's the only possible scenario if you don't give it back: They discover it and ask for the money back. You refuse. They go to the cops. You get arrested.

You don't make enough money to not to notice, if you bring it up it'll look good and in sometimes it is more work to recover the amount than what it is worth.

They can also ask you down the road what happened. I had a similar situation happen. I was getting paid for time that I was supposed to be getting in paid as the hours were giving me a credit. I told my boss, they said not to worry about it.
