Hey /adv/.
Would you be for or against raising a child in a more off-the grid location/low media environment? My wife and I are expecting this coming January, and we're trying to decide the best location to raise a child. As soon to be new parents living in an extremely bad area, we feel its best to move out to somewhere nearby a small town. (Roughly 4-8 miles out )
Our hope here is to buy a house or build one outside a small coastal town preferably. We figured there will be more opportunities for her to explore by being in between a forested location and beach. What helps more is that our current apartment/dwellings barely has technology in it to start either outside my office, making us less tech dependent to start. Even more so though, we wanted a nearby small town in hopes that our daughter won't feel completely abandoned from children her own age, and so that we can still rely on the bare necessities of a food market and doctor's office to get by when needed. We figure she will wind up developing a lot recreational activities, become more studious, and be a more imaginative and creative person without the technology influence as shes forced to entertain herself.
On the other hand, our friends and even co-workers are telling us that its better to raise her acknowledging and interacting with technology often since its becoming more and more prominent and would disconnect her from the youth otherwise. While we agree to that last statement, we feel like there is a huge problem area from technology absorption. Examples given, developments of social inclusiveness and alienation can come to those who become too invested into technology. My wife and I use to be clear examples of that, and is how we engaged and eventually developed a relationship from. We feel people today are less impressed and get too dependent with their gadgets.
