I've got a intermittent smacking sound playing through my computer speakers and it's driving me crazy.
It sounds like the kind of noise an instant messenger program would use to indicate someone signing on or off. It always plays in pairs, and plays every few minutes, with the pair of smacks playing one or two seconds apart.
I've looked through task manager and I can't see anything out of place. I can't figure out what's causing this sound. Help?

Are you sure it's from the audio output from the computer or the speakers itself? One way you can test is to use headphones/earbuds and see if they produce that sound.

Yeah; when I turn the speaker volume up the sound gets louder.

I've also eliminated my browser and website sounds (I thought it was Facebook chat at first), and my antivirus program.

Restore your computer back to a time before the sound was happening.

okay well try plugging in different sound devices, if it persists on each and every one of them, then it's probably a problem with the computer, proceed to reinstall your windows, eliminating any software issues, if that doesn't work it's probably your sound card/motherboard, and you need to replace it.

Actually I'm not sure. The sound gets louder when I turn the speakers up, which makes me think it's a software sound. But, I can leave some earbuds in and check. It's rhythmic though, too, which makes me highly doubt it's the speakers.

I don't know if I'll be able to find my disc. If I can I guess I'll have t do that as a last ditch.

I was thinking that the sound was being caused by some kind of malware program or something that's not listed in my task manager. Is this not likely?

it is not likely that malware is causing it imo. I am suggesting windows reinstallation as it is a cure-all, and it eliminates any and all software issues, without having to go digging into processes and services. if you have another computer (computer 2 in further text), you can take the hard drive from computer 2 and replace it with computer 1's (your computer) hard drive, then computer 1 will boot with computer 2's windows, therefore testing if there is anything on computer 1's hard drive that is causing the sound glitch. if, when you switch the hard drives, there is no more smacking sounds, proceed to switch back the hard drives and reinstall your windows on computer 1.

This is the only computer I have. By "reinstalling", you don't mean the full formatting and stuff do you? I don't have the means to back up my harddrive.

it is recommended that when you reinstall you format the whole hard drive, but you can format only the partition where windows is installed. And yes, you should have a second storage solution. external hard drives are pretty cheap these days, and also if you don't mind mark friking dinkleberg selling your data, you can open some cloud storage account and upload all your shit there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DN1TIDZPH4

Still hoping someone can tell me something definitive. I didn't really think about it until just now, but static gets louder too when you turn up the volume, so I guess my program assumption was faulty. Could a problem with the sound card or motherboard really cause something so intermittent and rhythmic?

Try running a Linux LiveUSB. It's very easy to set one up and won't affect your computer's current configuration.

If you still hear the sounds, it's a hardware problem causing interference. If you don't hear the sounds, it's malware.
