moving abroad with debt?

My s/o lives in OH. I want to live in OH. I am UK born & bred, and have a small debt of 2.5k to bank (overdraft) & 1 CC, and 12k to to gov't, which I can pay off overseas.

Has anyone managed the move? Not to OH but from the UK to the USA with debt.

No but I did US to Turkey for a few years for work. It's ez pz now that everything is digital. Just don't expect to escape debt especially if you owe to a big bank or the British government. Our financial systems are very intertwined and have many reciprocal agreements.

On what terms are you going to the US? Tourist visa? Student visa? Green card lottery? You can't just move without some legal jumping-through-hoops, debt or no debt.

I don't plan on 'escaping' it - I just think it will be simpler once I've moved, rather than waiting and then moving.

The distance is causing a strain on my relationship, plus I can simply move abroad with my company & remain in the same role. Until I move, me living in the UK is simply me waiting to go out there, so I'm not really "living" (no socialisation, working constantly). I also have next to no ties to my family so nothing really is stopping me.

It is very unlikely that you'll be able to switch from tourist to working visa. Barring something unusual (Are you the world's foremost authority on something?) the best you can probably hope for is to make contacts so some US employer is willing to go through the paperwork. Then you'll probably have to return home and re-apply for a work visa from the UK, backed with the job offer and the potential employer's assurance that he can't find a US citizen fit for the job.

The marriage route is not assured, but more likely to work.

You just gotta get the work visa sorted before you come on the tourist or marry that ladyfriend of yours and get citizenship that way.

Me moving there is easier bc my s/o has family, therapists, pets to think about. I have myself and my books. Plus I've wanted to move there since I was a young teen and I'm nearing my mid 20s now, so why not? Everywhere is shit when it comes down to it so what does it matter? The whole purpose of this thread is me moving with debt, so no I've never been. My s/o used to live here before moving back to the USA. In moving, I will be placing my trust in them but I know the family so well & the city that I'll be gaining a higher quality of life. Atm it's just me in a mouldy bedsit in rainy England, with one friend (who is moving to NY next yr anyway) and my job. Over there it would be me & my s/o, my s/o's pets and family being close by and my job.
