I want to play the piano

Anybody here play the piano? How feasible is it for an adult with no musical background to learn how to play an instrument well? I'm a complete beginner, can't even read notes. Sort of wish my parents had made me take piano lessons when I was a kid, although it probably wouldn't have worked as I had no interest in such things back then.

What would be the best way to go about this? Piano lessons? Buying a used piano and practicing by myself?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Depends on how you learn. I would probably need someone who tells me so sometimes what i do wrong or that i do something the right way.
But i would say as long as you don't have any major motoric problems you should be able to learn it. It is of course hard work.

Yeah, I would probably need lessons, don't really know how I would learn otherwise. So I should probably take a few lessons first, and eventually get my own piano once I feel I'm making enough progress.

I wish I was friends with someone who knew how to play, lessons seem to be pretty fucking expensive. I guess this might be one of those goals in life that I'll achieve if I ever graduate and get a steady job.

not OP, I had some lessons for two yeas as a kid, then stopped and now I want to start again and try without a teacher.
I know all the theory and can play basic pieces. How far will this take me?

Good choice, lad!
Piano is one of the most fulfilling instruments ever invented.

So, I want to keep it short:

- Get a teacher in the first year to get correct form and posture, body and finger need correct form or you will screw up in future.

- It's best to practice 30 minutes a day than 8 hours in one day per week. Trust me, the brain learns stuff like that way better if you practice continually

- It will take a shitload of time, but it is worth it

- Always take one sond that is hard to learn, and try to keep it as a "mission" to best this song one day.

- Best way to practice is to buy an used digital piano or a real one, but be sure to test it out before ultimately buying. The Keys of the piano is the most crucial part - it HAS to be high quality. Otherwise your fingers won't develop as they should, and it feels clunky and boring.

- Again, you need a teacher in the beginning. Seriously. After a year, you will be able to learn stuff by yourself.

- "To read at sight" - This is difficult, it's like learning a new language. It's fucking worth it, but will probably take a lot of time. Do it while studying everything else.

Best of all, don't overwork yourself, don't be too ambitious, or it won't be fun at all.

I picked it up at 21, I'm pretty good now. I already had a long musical background in school though so my ear being very developed and able to break apart chords really helped. The biggest benefit with the piano as opposed to the guitar for instance is that the keys are laid out in order. You won't have to put a lot of time into "where is that note" or "how do I put this chord together" because everything is laid out in order. I didn't take any lessons, but I read a "piano for dummies" and watched a lot of youtube videos. Basically I approached it the same way you approach learning most other things - just jump in and start doing it. I didn't get any counter-strike lessons but I went from being unable to climb a ladder to a high level. How did I do this? Play, play play. Just keep playing and enjoy figuring things out, and eventually you'll pick it up.

Having said that, getting a lesson here and there is probably a good way to speed things along, but I never felt like my learning was on the clock. It was never my intention to play a Rachmaninoff concerto, just to be able to play the songs from movies and video games I like.

Also, there's no reason to learn sheet music like some of the guys in here have said. My highest objective was to learn to play things by ear, and I can do that now to people's amazement. That song you linked, I could just head over to my piano right now and play something very close to it. If I ever do find that I need a little bit more specifics, there's this great program called "synthesia" that works basically like guitar hero. You don't even have to download it, almost every song has a synthesia upload on youtube for you to follow along. That's how I learned my first semi-complex song, "to zanarkand." I just took the synthesia video part by part until I had it down.

Eventually, you'll start to see the "meta" of songs and realize how similar they are, and naturally see the "left hand" and "right hand" in your head

Once a week should be fine, your teacher would probably say the same thing about practicing regularly at home. But, feel free to go twice a week if you like (and have the money ofc)
