What advice would you give yourself before starting university if you could go back in time? How would you prepare?

My grandma is paying for the entire thing. I plan on majoring in electrical engineering but I'm really trying to find a reason not to. I plan on studying 3+ hours each day, easily. I'm not worried about not being good enough. I'm just worried that it won't be the best choice and that I would have been better off in an easier major like business. The university is Penn State.

Take your time, enjoy your coursework and enjoy learning all the subject matter.
If you DON'T like math, science, engineering, etc, DON'T major in a STEM field. You'll slog through school and when its all over and you graduate, you'll realize you have to do this as a job for 8 hours a day.

Stop and look around your campus, join clubs, socialize, hang around and be part of things (I don't mean parties). If all you do is live in a bubble and shuttle from class to your dorm you're not getting everything out of university that you could be.

Don't worry about not being good enough, if you had already mastered your field you wouldn't be in school. Just use the opportunity to learn and better yourself.

It sounds like some motivational bullshit, but my point is to not let "university" bog you down.

1. Shadow professionals in your desired field, preferably before college. This gives you a feel for what your desired major(s) line you up for in the job field. Rule of thumb is if you hate following the professionals along, find a different job aspiration/major. This goes especially for all you aspiring pre-meds out there.

2. Don't choose a major just because it's easy or hard or you think it'll pay off well. Obviously, don't go after something that has minimal income return, but be sure to pick something you enjoy or at least sort of like. If you pick something that you hate, you're going to have a problem holding a job down no matter how good you are -- because you'll hate your job and your life, and you'll turn out just as salty as all the angry virgins on /adv/.

3. Have some idea of what you want to do after college. You don't need to be 100% sure, but have a goal. Otherwise, you're choosing your path blindly.

4. Get as many internships/ co-ops in as possible. No matter where you go or what you do, your degree and GPA will always take a serious backseat to experience. Get that experience.

5. Actually go to class and study. College is a big investment. Don't blow it. If you're having problems motivating yourself to attend class and study, reconsider if you are actually doing something you enjoy.

6. Join some clubs in areas you're interested in. Try to have at least two "hobby" clubs and at least one professional club (alumni association doesn't count). After a semester or so, decide which is your favorite and try for leadership positions within the club.

7. Find people you actually enjoy spending time around and spend time with them. Don't spend all your time impressing and chasing people who have something you want.

8. Try to have balance. You shouldn't be miserable, but college should be challenging.

Explore your campus and clubs. connections you make within your major and without it become your colleagues and connections for your professional life down the road.

MAKE USE OF DROP/ADD PERIODS. if a class is shaping up to be too hard or confusing, drop that shit while it is in its 100% reimbursement period and add something else. Drop/add periods are also useful for snapping up places in previously full classes that you need.

Top three things that if you keep in mind you'll be successful.

1. Go to class and talk to your professors outside of class.
2. Get an internship because that is where you will actually learn how to do things.
3. You're there to get a degree not to fuck the whole town, if you can handle both that's great but a lot of people can't handle either so if you have to pick between social stuff and school then pick school cause you have the rest of your life for friends.

If you just want a college experience more than being successful when you're done then you can just cruise through school probably and ignore this stuff.

I've just graduated from university after studying mechanical engineering. Make a real effort to find people that you get on with properly, and if you really get on with them then keep them as friends. Socialise with people on your course(s), because they're who you'll see most. You say that you'll spend 3+ hours per day studying, but that's probably not going to happen, so at least make sure you start revising around 6-8 weeks before exams, so you have enough time to catch up.
