I don't know if I need stiches or not. I have a cut similar to the one in the pic, but mine is more of an acute angle, mostly under the skin, with a big flap on the knuckle. I'd take a pic but my phone is broken.

to clarify, I don't give a shit if it leaves an ugly scar, I'm just worried it'll get infected or the flap above the cut will die or something. when I apply pressure the cut is almost hidden, it was done with a razor sharp knife

if it has stopped or the blood can be contained do the following

1-wash it
2-Bathe yout fucking finger in alcohol. it will hurt but count to 3.
3- DONT USE COTTON to cover it, use gauze, sterile, clean gauze, every pharmacy has it
4-use medical tape for the gauze around the wound
5-use a plastic bag to bathe
clean it everyday and change the gauze 2 times a day

Do you have a full range of motion in the finger?
Do you have full sensitivity in the finger (without tingling or places without feeling)?

If yes to both then clean it well with disinfectant. If the finger is kept straight using a splint then butterfly (adhesive) sutures can be used to hold it closed and it will probably be alright. Cover it with gauze and a protective bandage leaving the splint in place and held by the bandage.

Any pain, swelling, redness or heat in it the area will need immediate medical attention as it could be infected.

It will take a few days or a week before you can bend the finger - that's a crap spot to get cut.

no med tape or gauze, it's pretty small on the surface, just a u-shape, but i cut about halfway from the edge of my knuckle to a bt past the center of it

well i'm gonna be wet and flexy all the time until monday so maybe the question isnt so much do i need stitches, but will stitches help? and what kind of damage control can i do? I really can't afford to miss a single day of work

Firstly, wash your hands and clean out your cut with hydrogen peroxide.
Then, take something very stiff that's about the width and length of your finger (wooden craft / Popsicle sticks work best) and make a splint, taping the top and base of your finger to the stick.
Get some neosporin and a band-aid, and wrap is snug around your finger and the split. If its bleeding bad I'd recommend some gauze and a band-aid.

The wound needs to be cleaned, held together and kept dry. If it's open and wet the edges will become swollen and either infected or badly scarred.

I know you don't care about a visible scar but scar tissue is inflexible and you'll lose mobility over the joint. That's why when looking at your finger joints you see loose skin tighten as you bend the joint. Scar it up badly and you'll have problems with the skin and tissues underneath.

I know how cyanoacrylate works, my concern is the above, plus it should be 2-octyl- cyanocrylate for medical purposes (although superglue works ok too).

Either follow good advice OP or keep waiting for someone to say what you want to hear.

It's admittedly not as bad as a cut on the joint, but a while back I got brushed with an industrial fabric cutter. I was lucky that it cut through along the edge of the nail, but not quite into it!

No stitches. I rinsed the shit out of it immediately to make sure it was VERY clean, dried it off, raised it, applied pressure (for a long time) until it mostly stopped bleeding. I did use fabric bandaids to keep the flap secure during work. But I also checked the wound twice a day - cleaned it, inspected it, applied fresh bandaging. Tiny scissors to cut away the bandaid, soaked in saline "wound wash" to let me remove it without tearing. Qtips soaked with more saline to gently clean around the wound. Carefully dry. Resisted using other products at first and kept it simple. Once healing was firmly established I used a little Ozonol on the bandaid. The last cleaning of the day I'd try to leave it unbandaged for a while if I had the time to sit. I watched carefully to see if the flap still had blood flow, checked for signs of infection, yada yada. The flap slowly started healing back onto my finger and I just trimmed away the dead edges of skin as they grew out.

Pain in the ass, took weeks to heal. Have a permanent bump there now but no other problems.

you don't really need stitches but for sure you need anti-biotics and over the counter stuff likely is not strong enough

that mess will get seriously infected

visit emergency room very soon or get some prescription antibitocs

do you even know what germs are ?

go read about the special kinds of infections you get when punching somebody in the teeth cuts your knuckles - the skin heals over the infection is still there and gets worse

If it's a fairly deep gash, I recommend you do NOT cover in alcohol. It is clear a majority of these anons lack any knowledge whatsoever involving anything medical related. You may want to rinse it through with cool water. Pat dry with cotton, swab, something. Do NOT blow dry with your mouth. If it appears you may not need stitches, you should apply some ointment to the wounded area, and then apply a sterile band-aid.
