I had a god awful time talking to anyone I didn't know and for the most part, just hung around a hand full of people. I ended up getting a job in retail as a sales person. That job forced me to approach people, find out how to connect to people. A good way to start a conversation is to say something funny. If you can make them laugh, you've got a chance. Make a comment about the weather. "You seen all this rain? It's like [your location here] is trying to do it's best impression of Seattle." Unless you live in Seattle. Then go from there, talk about the last time it was nice outside. Being more comfortable around strangers is a learned skill from us type B personalities. It takes practice.
