Spanish & German major here. (Dual degree) I wonder how people who graduate in something like Sociology or something similar find good jobs.

Have any of you got experience with this? I know it's possible, I'm just wondering how it's possible.

I don't, actually.
Currently I'm a junior communication consultant, since I speak Dutch, English, Spanish, German and French fluently. It's a well-paid job but I might not continue after I graduate. I am planning on continuing within communication, though.

There's a secret they don't tell you in college, because if they did, no one would take business courses.:

Except for some technical fields, your major doesn't matter. We hire the person, not the transcript. We want to see someone who majored successfully in something, whatever it was, because that shows some ambition and stick-to-it-ness. We'd rather not have business majors because we first have to unteach you all the stuff you learned in class before teaching you our company's way of doing things.

But mainly we want to see someone with smarts, ambition, imagination and the ability to fit in with our corporate personality.

A hot-shot economics (or English, or two languages) major will always get the job ahead of a braindead business major.

Math Education major reporting in. Ask any questions you want. People with sociology, psychology, philosophy, and all sorts of liberal arts degrees almost always end up going for teaching jobs because there simply isn't any demand for what they majored in. And then they get fucked up even more because they don't realize that getting a good teaching job requires minimum a teaching degree and that takes more work than the work they did o get their shitty degree. So they end up teaching without a teaching degree for which the salary is mediocre. Not to mention the demand for teachers of such subjects is also not big. I've seen this story happen way too many times.

It's about networking.
You do your major, you do any outside training, and after that the only real way in other than luck is to have your professor know a professor or know an office that is hiring.
Not to mention you can't really slide by with just a BA. If you plan on majoring in something like sociology you have to get your masters or PHd eventually, and then you may be able to spin in into something else. There are a lot of jobs that may not seem like it but will hire Soc and liberal arts majors just because it's a major that requires research, critical thinking and has a broad base to work off of. That way companies don't have to "unteach" you things and train you their own way.

a few interesting things:
> german major friend makes more money than all tech friends

How is it possible?
You need to be ambitious and really damn good at what you do. Don't take the easy way out, work hard, and never be content. If you fall down, bounce back up and learn from your errors. This will make you 1000% more competent than most of your competition.
