Can I get a wolf as a pet in rural NY? I want to find a wolf puppy in the woods and claim it. I have a lot of neighbors and not really a lot of woods for it to go in so that's a worry.

Looks like wolves are outlawed as pets in NY, so if you get one you are fucked. It's not like keeping a ferret in California or even a ball python in NY. Wolves are not like dogs, and you can read many, many, many accounts of how a person got a wolf pup because it was cute, only for it to become far too much to handle as an adult (especially if it becomes aggressive to them or others).

OP, get a Czechoslovakian wolf dog. It's what happens when you mix German shepherds with wolves. It's a hard breed to train and maintain, but at least it's not a savage animal.

They're not domesticated animals though, and a wolf raised like a dog will generally be an unhappy creature because you're ignoring its needs and punishing it for doing things it's pre-programmed to do. Wolves can be successfully kept in captivity, but generally by people who appreciate them for what they are and treat them like wild animals. If you want a companion that lives in your house and enjoys your company, you would be happier with a dog.

I would never get a wolf or even wolfdog as a pet regardless. Wolves are hard as shit to keep as pets. They are definitely not dogs, and will not act like dogs either.

There's a tumblr called "yourdogisnotawolf" or some such, she does a lot of posts about the dangers and difficulties of owning a wolfdog.
