So, what shit can actually happen when you let your cat outside? It was used to traffic, I doubt it got ran over by a car. Is it actually common that some pieces of shit drive around at night and pick up cats? Or that people set up live traps? Why, though? Do laboratories pay money for random cats? Are they just freaks that want to see every cat dead?

Honestly, I'd pay 1.000 bucks just to know what the fuck happened to my cat. It's the uncertainty that sucks so much.

Literally anything could have happened. It was entirely unsupervised so of course you'll never know. And the possibilities are endless as to what it could have been. The most likely event was that it was hit by a car or eaten by a predator just because that's what happens most of the time. Yeah yeah I know it was so used to the traffic but accidents happen and it's a goddamn cat, it's unreasonable to assume it couldn't have fucked up.

But anything else you listed may have happened. I hope you checked at all shelters, on Craigslist lost and found and posted signs for its return in case what happened was someone simply found your cat and didn't think it was a good idea for it to wander the night and took it in or to the shelter.

I'm sure that there is some instances of them being caught for lab testing and as bait animals for fight dogs but I would guess that's not insanely common. And someone may have set a live trap simply because they were tired of your cat shitting in their kids sandbox or something and took exception to you choosing to let it roam freely.

This is the main reason people should keep their cats indoors. For the cat's sake because it simply isn't safe out there. There are maniacs and your only recourse is to keep your cat in your house or on your property. Unless, I guess, you think the casualty rate is fine.

and every outdoor cat owner thinks their cat is "used to traffic", then the cat gets "lost", most likely run over. I know because the shelter I work at bags and tags lost DOA pets that the city picks up so the owner can claim their body. the entire time I've worked there every single one we've gotten in is a dead "free roaming" cat, almost always from getting hit by a car. then the same people come back two weeks later to adopt a god damn kitten. the stupid fucks never learn

the other likely options are that a responsible person found your wandering cat and brought them to a shelter or kept them. or that they died from the thousand other things you willingly exposed your cat to. take your pick. it's highly unlikely someone took your cat for experimentation or dogfighting or something. your cat is just another lost outdoor cat with an unknown and likely sad fate. don't like it? keep your damn cat inside and on your own property

Don't be a lazy ass and play with your cat. Don't get a cat if you have no time to spend on caring for it properly. I have indoor cats. It is so little effort to keep them totally happy and stimulated indoors. Drop a milk tab on the floor and you won't have to do anything else to entertain for days.

But at that point what's the point of bothering having a cat, just put out a squirrel feeder and pretend they're your pets when you watch them? But ontopic OP if alot of peoples cats are missing there could either be a stray animal getting them,which sounds unlikely as someone would most likely hear something or find something.
Or someone could be stealing animals around your neighborhood, shit it could even be animal control if your cat didnt have a collar.
It really is a huge unknown because everything from some 16 year old stealing peoples cats to be an edgy fuck to someone started feeding your cat so its hanging around there house now
