Hey /an/ so I got a 5 month old kitten from Craigslist last Saturday. Unfortunately he was infested with fleas and the shithead previous owners didn't tell me. Im really weird about getting fleas myself, but I don't want to abandon the kitty like my bitch of a gf wants me to. What can I do to help him before going and getting a spray. Tried to use flea shampoo but he's so scared of water I traumatized him. :(

and Google is your friend, anon. you likely will have to give her a bath in something that kills fleas. I hear dawn soap works well since most over the counter flea meds are shit and very few can actually be used on kittens. talk to your vet for other alternatives

also, you are going to want to get some dewormer from your vet. I guarantee she's got worm gut

Perhaps take the kitty to a vet ASAP? Tomorrow morning? Soon?

Unless there's a way for you to get your kitty to bathe in flea shampoo, I'm at a loss of what to do.

don't. flea shampoo is shit and can hurt your cat.

use dawn soap. make a ring of it around his neck and lather that up first so the fleas don't just sit and wait on his head for you to quit washing.

don't let him stand in deep (for him) water while you're washing. fleas can't drown unless they're submerged for over 48 hours. put him in a dry sink and lather him up with soap and water, and let the dawn soap sit on him for at least 5 minutes. this will suffocate most (not all!) of the fleas. after he's mostly dry, go over him with a flea comb. comb him out multiple times a day.

vacuum vacuum vacuum. vacuum twice a day. keep the kitten confined to one area of the house (this should be done anyway to get him used to the place since he's new), and vacuum the shit out of that area. throw away what you vacuum up every day, because they can live in the vacuum and come back out.

for one day, put your cat in a crate/carrier and borax your carpets. because of the text limit, you'll need to google that shit.

I got rid of fleas from my rescue puppy in a week this way. you must be vigilant about the vacuuming and the combing.

forgot to mention: when you comb your cat with the flea comb, fill up a big old tupperware of water and mix it with a little more dawn soap and flick the fleas off your comb into it. they will not drown for 48 hours, but the soap breaks the surface tension of the water so they can't float. keep that water out for at least 48 hours, then you can dump it down the drain. if you don't wait, they can wake up in your sink drain and start coming back out from there. fleas suck so much dick.

also, wash his bedding at least every two days. little eggs will fall off of him and hatch in your carpets, blankets, cat bedding, clothes on the floor, under the couch, etc. you'll have to vacuum them up or wash everything that can go into the washer in very hot water.

protip: you WILL think you are done at some point, and you will be wrong. they come in generations. for every adult flea you've got, you've got a hundred more eggs, cocoons, and larvae in your house. so you'll have gotten rid of the adults, but three days later the cocoons will have opened up and you'll be back at square one. this is why it's so important to vacuum.

if you live in a hot/humid area, sorry. I live in colorado and having fleas is very rare for us, even on outside pets, so it was easier for me to get rid of them than it would be for most people because of the dry air. they really thrive in warm, slightly wet places, so turn on your air conditioner.

OP here , my kitty is now flea free and happy as can be. I rubbed some flea spray that was safe for cats on him. Then used home flea spray on my furniture and his bed. I also gave him one last bath for extra precaution, this time I used a wet cloth to scrub flea shampoo off. Its been 2 days now and all is well. My bitchy gf even warmed up to the kitten.
