I've seen people advocating for breeding health issues out of dogs, but can someone tell me what would happen to the dogs then? Would we just end up with "dog" in general and no more breeds? Or would new but healthy breeds be made?

Why would it get rid of breeds?

German Shepherds would still be German Shepherds if any dog with hip dysplasia was banned from breeding. Pugs would still be pugs if you fixed their fucked up face, it would just be a 19th century pug.

Sounds like I must have misunderstood something then. I thought they were advocating making mutts because "mutts are healthier". So to breed them healthy, how do you go on about it? Can you run tests or will time tell which ones are healthy?

you can breed two healthy purebreds together and they will generally produce a litter of healthy purebreds.

there are tests you can run to determine if a dog meets health requirements.

this is why health testing has to be consistent across the board. great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents. the care of a dog doesn't end when their breeding years are done.

The Bobtail Boxer is an excellent example of proper breeding to improve an existing dog breed.

Instead of docking tails breed the dogs to have naturally short tails.

In this case the Boxer was bread back to the Corgi (which has a naturally short tail) and then bread back to Boxers until the result was a Boxer with a naturally short tail.

Kennel clubs need to return to better breeding practices rather than trying to surgery dogs to fit a breed standard.

How did they do that without making the breed sick? Sounds like they would need a lt of inbreeding for such a new breed.

Read the link, they go into great detail about the breeding and genetics for the short tail. The bobtail is a simple recessive trait, and the dogs are no more inbred than say humans with blue eyes.

Most breeds would be saved through simple measures of being bred against extremity and towards moderation. For example plenty of German shepherds with moderate or straight backs are born but they're usually not bred with except in working lines and pugs or English Bulldogs with longer snouts and better symmetry are born but they are not considered breed ideal. If breed ideal was considered the healthiest examples and the purebred dogs were bred for that and maybe just a little outcrossing in the worst offending breeds for genetic diversity then they'd very quickly become much healthier dogs. Within just a few generations even.
