Hey /asp/, can any of you guys give me some advice on medicine balls please I'm an aspiring amateur boxer and I want to get a medicine ball so I can improve my training at home, only thing is, I've got no idea which weight to get. I'm going to be doing the punch drills, sit up twists, throws, all the stuff to train my power, so I think I don't want to go heavy, but I don't want to go too light that it will become less of a challenge quickly. So which weight(s) medicine balls do my fellow fighters use? Any particular brand/style? Money's tight at the moment so preferably not too expensive. Bit of background, I'm British, 6'1, and 89kg. Thanks guys

>>750920 >Bit of background, I'm British, 6'1, and 89kg. You call that a background?
I'm a Brazilian, Irish mix, 5'11'' 155lbs.
I like long walks on the beach, 90s movies, and Italian food. I can be a top or a bottom, and BDSM isn't uncharted territory for me.

As title implies, the pros and cons of each. Shit like webm related has shown me that i should probably learn how to defend myself to the best of my ability in any and all possible situations

Use the catalog next time faggot, assuming this isn't bait. Lrn2weapon. Especially guns. Suck a dick if you have to. Parkour and self awareness best self defense. Shit like krav and military stuff is basically a crash course for if you don't have time to git gud, since if you lose your gun you're probably fucked. Incorporating dirty blows would be easier if you're good at something anyways. The drills could be good though. If systema is anything like aikido, it's probably shit. Technically there are parts of it that can work, but only against drunk shits who won't put up much, or during very specific situations, so it's no good unless as a supplement. Grappling is good one on one, but shit like judo might be usable if you git gud enough since it has muh standing takedowns. Groundwork stuff like BJJ can work one on one. In a group you're fucked. Any kind of grappling can get fucked if the dude has a knife or gun. Might be able to do dome of those crazy wrist lock self defense bullshit if you're already super close when he's reaching for something, I don't know. Wouldn't risk it though. Striking is striking. Be competent at one and you'll be ahead of wild haymaker retards. If the guy don't know shit about grappling or a striking art with kicks, than lowkicks are your friend. Boxing has good footwork and swaying to avoid punches. Muay thai is good, and it has really good synergy with judo because muh clinch. Tkd has kicks, probably shit on its own in da streetz. Kyo is cool, and will make you a tough sonuva bitch, who can take and dish out hella body blows while being used to no gloves, but in competition there are no head blows and they just kind of stand there and beat each other. FMA and similar are cool if you can carry a dumb stick with you. Knife arts are a thing but stabby stabby gets the job done. R8 my post /asp/, give me validation.

ASK to see qualifications. There are a lot of bullshit artists out there.
I'd say krab mango will give you decent self defense skills more quickly, but systema will make you a better fighter overall.
Seriously go checkem both out. If you choose systema I'd supplement it with boxing. Supplement krab mango with judo.

Sup, /asp/. Newfag here with questions regarding Taekwondo. I'm interested in starting Taekwondo, as there's a few clubs near me and it's of interest. Anyway, how intense is the training for beginners? It appears that I'd need to spend a fair few lessons in the 'all-ages' classes before an invite to the upper, sporting classes, which seem to be the ones in which I'd learn techniques where I'd be able to expedient more energy, or am I completely wrong in my assumptions? Do correct my uneducated self. I tear through food and I can really feel the excess now that my ice hockey season finished and need to get into something to burn it all off. Pic unrelated.

>>750097 OP, it depends on the school you go to and the instructors you have; not every karate school is going to be the same, not every tae kwon do school will be the same, etc.
Do as much research on your local schools as possible: talk to fiends, family, co-workers, etc.
See if any offer a free first class or few classes; just go out and do some leg work, bro: and good luck!

All the stuff about it not being the worst, that belongs to other things, and it depending is true enough if you really like it. Just make sure it's not the one with kick fencing competitions.

avoid any school that starts with ATA the training wont be intense for beginners, ive found it scales pretty well with level since the kicks take more energy than any other art ive worked with(started tkd about a year ago, have background in muay thai/bjj/judo) if the school is at all good you will be sweating profusely at the end of most practices, which sounds ideal for what youre talking about(fitness as a goal, instead of the fedorable idea that youre going to fight muggers with your hands)

>>750535 because people here are for the most part ignorant when it comes to anything but the martial art they train. most people think JKD is a martial art like wing chun or some bullshit when thats not the case. when a gym advertises as a JKD school that should mean they teach a variety of different martial arts, some not commonly used in MMA competitions like Judo or FMA.
Anonymous
>>750551 >>750552 What if the place advertises as a Jun Fan Gung Fu school and specifically states that it provides exposure to the "basic" system of "keep what works, discard the rest"? They say they try to stick to Lee's and Inosanto's vision and that the school is just about learning and not competition oriented
I don't think it has a lot of instructors, although it also provides Eskrima courses.

>>745162 It really depends on the JKD school. A lot /asp/ tend to think JKD means wing chun + boxing from a weird stance.
If you find a good instructor (someone from Inosanto or Bustillo would be a good sign) what you'll get is really closer to MMA + escrima.
In fact I was at a Richard Bustillo Seminar a few months ago. Saturday morning was what /asp/ thinks JKD is: we did some trapping mixed with punches, knees, elbows. Then saturday afternoon was stick and knife work. Sunday morning we did BJJ and then sunday afternoon was kickboxing.

What martial art/combo would be good to learn? Looking for solid self-defense stuff, so I can handle myself in a fight. Past experience limited to minor ability in Judo. I'm in NYC around Greenwich Village area, so there's a couple of martial arts schools (but they charge like $250+ a month). There's an MMA gym in SoHo that has $99/mo and $150 startup fee for unlimited classes, would that be worth it/is MMA good for all I need to know?

>>750677 >you usually don't need to worry about kicking If anything, you should be worrying about getting punched.
People on the streets punch, but a lot of them don't kick.
It's not just easier, but it's also safer to keep distance and throw leg kicks against the common street boxer.
I gave my reasoning in
>>750631 .
I'm not saying that boxing is bad for self defense, I'm not saying that a boxer's hands aren't good, but low kicks are the better option, and low kicks are especially the better option when combined with jabs and fakes.

I am not sure if it is a constent stream of new people who never lurk long enough or it is the same few people making the same thread over and over again so they can argue about the same old shit. Ether way I am starting to get tired of this thread. There is little reason why there must ALWAYS be one every day since this boards creation. Just lurk more and do your own fucking research. I am tired of spoon feeding the same shit >9000 times and I am sure many here feel the same.
