>self-defenseEvery apropriate measure to prevent violence towards you or others. This considers many parts, but as a rule of thumb everything that would have happend to you (and you can show probable cause that it would have happend to you) is OK:
Someone punches you, you shoot him --> Not OK, because there's no evidence your life was threatend.
Someone pulls out a knife, you shoot him --> Depends, but can you proof that he wasn't just joking? And why didn't you warn him or shot at his leg? Did he follow you, why didn't you just ran away?
Someone attacks you with a knife, you shoot him --> It's pretty clear your life was threatend, so so'll probably get away with it as "self defense". But if you had pepper spray in your pocket, you'll get asked why you didn't use it instead of the gun.
>mutual combatSomeone calls you an asshat and it's clear you just could have walked away from the scene but you decided to fight with him. There's no clear offender, both people wanted the fight.
>standing your groundIf someone picks up a fight (who isn't a retard, a child or an /asp/-ie) and you do what is apropriate, similar to "self defense". But it all depends on the subject, if you punch someone unconscious in a fight over a bottle of beer it's probably not OK.
>assaultA physical attack (or the immediate threat of a physical attack) which allows the other person to use self defense and/or stand his ground.
>attempted murder, murderYou made up a plan and try to kill someone. For example you put a knife in your pocket, wait until the other person arrives and try to stab him.
>manslaughterYou and some dude get in a fight, you push him and he accidentally lands with his head on a stone and dies. You had no intentions to kill him, it was an accident.
