How long did it take you to get the 1st dan?

I've been in aikido for 2~3 years and I'm 4th kyu.

What years do you think you have wait to have the first dan and a good level of your martial art?

Dog Brothers Gathering

No.740141 ViewReplyReportDelete
A buddy and I want to go to a Dog Brothers Gathering (maybe multiple depending on how it goes). I have a background in MMA and Kali and he's a fencer and HEMA buff. We want to use this as a sort of test of legitimacy.

We've started sparring full contact on a regular basis, but I want to ask /asp/ what more we could be doing and what we should expect.

How exactly do you differentiate one style of karate from another when it comes to actual sparring / competition? I see a lot of people on /asp/ say that Shotokan sucks and Kyokushin is the one to go for, but what's the difference between them? How can you tell the difference when watching?

Thoughts on MMA Classes

No.744713 ViewReplyReportDelete
So a local martial arts gym is starting to offer MMA classes. Am I right that thinking these classes are going to be too broad in scope to teach anything to a high enough standard?

From what i understand most UFC fighters have always learned one martial art and then move on to something else.

Can you really learn everything in one class?
