is judo safe? can a guy who can't see do judo? how long does it take to git reasonably gud?

i don't want to get my head hurt, or any of my bones (e.g. spine, arms) broken.

i also have shit vision and can't see without my glasses on (and don't wear contacts)

Fairly. I've done martial arts for two decades now and was injured less often than my friends who play soccer.
Obviously there is always a risk involved when doing sport though (unless you pick up chess)

Maybe. I'm not sure - its a disadvantage, but you are often so close to your enemy that you feel their movements through direct contact rather than seeing them.

Depends on how often you practice and what you consider "gud". You can do martial arts pretty much all your life and still improve, but I would say that two years of proper training should already get you a reasonable basis - you have to train for quite a while to turn the movements into reflexes you can perform without thinking, so anything below that might be a problem.

judo has a pretty high amount of injury in it depending on how competitive you are but there's a big focus on falling right and landing properly so you would be alright. no one is going to toss you before you can fall perfectly. i train in grappling and have glasses but it hasn't stopped me in the past.

You can do Judo on feeling tbh. My vision is -4 and I did Judo and boxing without any problems.

And with Judo your training partner can put you down very gently if he wishes.

Getting good will take a while though.

Judo is fucking fantastic. If you have an opportunity to train with a good teacher, I strongly encourage to take that opportunity. It's one of the safer legit martial arts that you can study, and eyesight beyond 3 feet isn't really an issue. It's more of a feel thing. Go for it, if you have a decent teacher in your are.

Judo's one of the more dangerous martial arts, but it's still fairly safe. The injuries tend to be knees and toes, compared to the head and brain injuries that you see more often in (for example) boxing.
If you're sensible, you're very unlikely to get any serious injuries from judo.

After 6 months of hard training you'll be a better fighter than 90% of the chucklefucks on the street. After a couple of years you should be consistently doing well in mid-level comps.

I'd highly recommend wearing contacts, but you can still do judo with shit vision. If you're short-sighted you'll be fine, but if you're long-sighted you'll have more difficulty.
There are some absolutely phenomenal fighters with zero or close to zero vision playing at a Paralympic level. They're some of the best fighters (with or without disabilities) on the planet, so definitely don't assume that blindness can stop you from being a great judoka.

I say just try it out and see how you go.

Pretty much this, but it depends. It's not dangerous unless you deperately want to win.

It's dangerous because people don't want to get thrown. If you keep in mind that it's a SPORT you'll be fine.

There are no rules in any version of judo's rule set that ban elbow pads and knee pads. No one wear them though because kneepads are not going to prevent the type of injuries that end up tearing ligaments. You'll need to wear knee braces or sleeves and or wrapping to protect

We have had juniors at our dojo do competitions and used mouth guards to protect their braces. Not sure where you are getting this ban on mouth guards.

The defacto form of protection for most judoka are wraps and braces. To protect ligaments and joints

which rule book? I'm studying for my ref cert here so i like to think i am rather knowledgeable when it comes to judo rules within the US and internationally. Mouth guards aren't worn all to often but there is nothing explicit against them.
