Dog Brothers Gathering

A buddy and I want to go to a Dog Brothers Gathering (maybe multiple depending on how it goes). I have a background in MMA and Kali and he's a fencer and HEMA buff. We want to use this as a sort of test of legitimacy.

We've started sparring full contact on a regular basis, but I want to ask /asp/ what more we could be doing and what we should expect.

I've never been there personally, but a friend of mine was. I guess it will be both, pain and fun. I'd say it's good to have some kind of (basic) grappling moves because the dog brothers tend to throw their sticks away and turn it into a grappling match, just look on youtube.

If you go there please come back here and say how it was, I'm pretty interested.

If anything, shit like Dog Bros should tell you how worthless stick fighting is. These guys literally wail on each other with escrima sticks and walk away with some lumps and contusions, maybe a broken rib or two, but more or less fine.

Why would you want to bother with a weapon that will simultaneously open up the possibility of an aggravated assault charge in a defense case while lacking the actually have the capacity to employ deadly force?

All of the downsides of a knife and none of the up sides!

Also the guy don't try to hit full force, because - you know, you don't want to actually hurt someone. I've seen what a stab from a stick can do to a face, it's not nice.

Also how do you want to simulate knife fighting? How do you wanna simulate shock from bloodloss, penetration depth of the balade, cutting tendons? While it's fun to train with (play) knifes, but it will always be pretention to some extent. That's just how weapon training works..

I appreciate the attempt, but if you just go check out some Dog Brothers stuff on youtube you'll see that it really is amateur hour shit.

Which is fine. But you can't walk in and expect any kind of actual martial ability from most of the people there.

I get what you all are saying, and you may very well be right, but honestly this seems to be the only legitimate outlet for full contact fighting with weapons. It may not be the most realistic, but it's better than nothing.

Not really related to Dog Brothers, but an interesting update on our training: I'm noticing some interesting carry over from the weapon sparring my friend and I have been doing to my Boxing/Muay Thai sparring at the MMA gym.

I feel like my reflexes have really been boosted and I'm moving quicker and more smoothly than before. I use to really struggle with slipping and the bob & weave in particular, but now I'm finding them a lot easier to apply.

I can kind of see why some Russians use the armored sword fighting as supplementary training for MMA now.

It's probably because you have to move bigger distances to escape/attack with a stick.

Thus said, I'm definately think that I have to take up boxing at some point, because FMA alone doesn't give you the edge you get in Boxing. It's often way to "technical" and too far from what is realistically doable in a full speed sparring. But it's still a good martial art.

I know what you mean about the high focus on technique, but I don't think the skills are unacheivable in full speed sparring. At first I was having trouble applying even the most basic Kali techniques against my friend, but after a few sessions I've managed to make some gradual progress. I think it's just a matter of actually trying to apply them and allowing yourself to fail a few hundred times before you get it.

Yeah, it depends.

I think FMA is a little bit like BJJ, because the stuff you actually need for "the street" (for whatever that means) take maybe 1 year to learn. After that you only learn how to counter other guys with your knowledge. And counters against that. And so on.

Not saying it's not worth it, your basics will of course get better with every year of trianing, but to manage a disarm in sparring is very difficult, even after years. Your best bet "on the streets" is to give him severe pain (i.e. a good connecting punch) and disarm him when he doesn't expect it. But a single disarm without proper set up? No way that would work that easily.
